Prior to beginning his career, Nick Charles worked as a cab driver. He eventually became known as CNN’s first sports anchor, but he tragically passed away from lung cancer in 2009 at the age of 64.

He co-hosted the CNN program Sports Tonight after graduating, which details his difficult time. He was presented the “CableACE awards” in 1989 and 1993.

He also won the “New York Sports Emmy” in 2004, the same year he started working as a sports anchor for the ESPN on Sports center.
