Sarbjit accidentally crosses the border into Pakistan in 1990 while drunk, where he is convicted as an Indian spy. He is known as Ranjit Singh and is accused of being responsible for bomb blasts in Lahore. His claims of innocence are dismissed, and he is tortured for months before he is able to inform his family of his abduction via letter. Sarbjit falsely confesses to terrorism in order to appease Pakistani police and is promptly sentenced to death. Dalbir, determined to free her brother, seeks the assistance of lawyer Awais Sheikh (Darshan Kumar). Their appeal for justice is supported throughout India and condemned in Pakistan; the media in both countries continues to cover the case, causing Sarbjit’s sentence to be overturned on multiple occasions.

She runs from pillar to post seeking assistance, but her credibility is at an all-time low, and the entire village refuses to believe her, so Chunni finally enters the haunted mansion alone in search of her sister.
