PREMIER LEAGUE INTRIGUES #3

Gameweek 3

Manchester City’s “walk over fest” almost put to an end by the Blades. When the champions of Europe came to Sheffield, they thought it would be an easy time with the promoted side. This was not the case. From the very early stages, Sheffield let City dominate possession of the Ball then capitalize on errors for their counterattacks. Sheffield defender Egan was judged to have handled the ball in his own box to hand City a penalty. Surprisingly, Haaland missed, striking the woodwork to relieve the Blades faithful. After the break however he would not forgive them again, jumping to a cross by Grealish and putting it past the goalkeeper and a defender. Sheffield would equalize through Bogle after being given room on the edge of the box to manouvre and score. However, City fought on and captain Kyle Walker teed up Foden who then left it off for Rodri to win it 2-1.

Etihad Stadium – City’s homeground

A pressing Brighton depressed by the Hammers blows. Roberto De Zerbi’s side played in their usual aggressive push forward to try and break West Ham down but it was clear that West Ham had no intention of playing a game of cat and mouse. During one instance, Brighton were building from the back in an attempt to push forward but the ball was pounced on by Michail Antonio who would assist James  Ward-Prowse for his first West Ham goal. Ferguson had two nice chances at the side of each half, with the second one better of the two but was saved by Areola. Jarrod Bowen squandered an opportunity when Benrahma had given him a good assist. At the second time of asking, Jarrod Scored from Benrahma’s sublime cross after a counterattack that Michail Antonio made from basically nothing. Michail Antonio went on to do the most when a cross from distance by Bowen got to him and he dummied a defender before placing the ball at the back of the net at the far post. Lewis Dunk almost scored a header from a corner but was denied by Areola. Pascal Groß scored a consolation goal for Brighton when he did a fake shot before shooting with power to the far post to make it 3-1.

Ten men Liverpool leave it late at St. James’ Park. Alexander Arnold made another defensive blunder when Liverpool met Newcastle and Anthony Gordon made the most out of it to strike it home. 1-0. Isak was receiving a through ball when Van Dijk inadvertently pushed him which the referree spotted to give him a red card. With the numbers advantage and a goal up, Newcastle refused to make the most of their chances. Anthony Gordon gave an impressive show in the game despite failing to add to his tally. Soon after, Almiron also dribbled past a multitude of red jerseys before curling the ball but it hit the woodwork, denying him his first goal this season. Newcastle were made to pay when Darwin Nunez pounced on a loose ball and scored. Salah would at the close of the match pass him the ball once more and he scored nearly in the same fashion to win it 2-1 despite the red.

Red Devils survive scare at home by Forest. Anthony nearly scored a curled shot during the earlier stages of the game but it was Nottingham Forest who scored first through Taiwo Awoniyi. He had caught the defence sleeping and rushed to put it past Onana. A few minutes later, Morgan Gibbs-White’s well taken freekick is met by Boly who placed it past a standing Onana. Eriksen caught Marcus Rashford’s low cross to score Manchester United’s first goal. Casemiro’s glancing header was wide and it denied Manchester come back to the game. He would be on the score sheet in the second half when Rashford lob-crossed the ball into the box following a free kick routine. The ball fell to Bruno who passed it to the goal scorer Casemiro. Matt Turner denied Anthony’s curling shot again. Forest man Worrall was given a red card after falling Bruno Fernandes at the edge of the box. Barely minutes later, Danilo fell Rashford in the box to award the Devils a penalty. Bruno scored to leave it 3-2 with the three points in the bag.

Maddison tears the Cherries apart. The awesome pairing of Son and Maddison was evidence Ange knew what he was doing. Bissouma drew away some defenders before passing the ball to Sarr, who in turn spotted Maddison’s run into the box and assisted him for Tottenham’s first goal. Richarlison failed to score a one-on-one with the goalkeeper as well as a header. Udogie then assisted Kulusevski  for Spur’s second and last goal of the game to end it 2-0.

Gunners lose points after Fulham lose mancin London Derby. Bukayo Saka’s back pass was ill-timed and not well taken and so Andreas Pereira swooped in to curl it at the near post following Ramsdale messy rush back to the net. The game became tense as Arsenal tried and tried to claw back into the game and Fulham did their best to defend the win. They were made to rue that decision when Arsenal super substitute Fabio Vieira made his way into the box and was tackled by Tete in the box. Saka took the spot kick sending Leno the wrong way, 1-1. A few minutes later, Saka then made a decisive pass to Vieira who made a picture perfect through pass that Nketiah put behind the net. Fulham were livid as their player had gone down during the buildup but the referree saw that it had not affected the play in any way.  On the 84th minute, Fulham went down to ten after Bassey committed his second bookable offence. This did little in the end as a corner by Harrison Reed found Palhinha free and able to score the equaliser past Ramsdale. It ended 2-2.

Sterlings brace and Jackson goal continue Luton’s woes in the Premier League. Chelsea came into the game without a win at home since March. Raheem Sterling stood out with his prowess in dribbling and excellent ball-carrying towards goal, attributes that were rewarded by his two goals. Malo Gusto assisted him for his first which he manouvred past the Luton players to score. Jackson then passed to Sterling during an attack and he crossed it to Enzo Fernandez at the far post but he hit the woodwork. Malo Gusto then assisted Sterling again for Chelsea’s second before the final nail on the coffin came when Sterling assisted Jackson who made no mistake putting it in. 3-0 was the final score.

One goal each, one point apiece. Crystal Palace visited the Bees on Saturday looking to get points from the guys in form. Edouard almost did when he dribbled and got into the box but was tackled before shooting to save Brentford. Brentford went ahead when Schade dropped a defender off his shoulders and took a shot at the far end. A goal of the week contender. Joachim Andersen became Crystal Palace’s hero when he created a chance and scored through Flekken’s legs to end it 1-1.

Emery’s army shine away at Burnley. Surprisingly Burnley dominated possession, unaware of the counter-attacking traps set for them by Aston Villa who had adopted a new formation. The first goal was evident of this, when Watkins received a long ball and sped towards goal before crossing to Matt Cash after the goalie had rushed towards him, he converted easily. Matt Cash overlapping runs visibly confused Burnley, he played Diaby who made his way into the box before returning it to a now open Cash so he scored his second goal . Burnley’s Foster pulled one back when he covered a cross into the box before shooting to make it 2-1. It did not matter because another counter saw Diaby score a third for Villa, his third in as many appearances. It was a master class performance by Villa.

Everton suffer defeat despite numerous attacks. The game that pitted two of the underwhelming teams in Premier League was unpredictable. Everton attacked early on, with one shot hitting the post and another the side netting. José Sá continued his impressive performance saving at the last second a Doucoure header that was goal bound. Doucoure then thought he had put the Toffees ahead later when he cut through the defence and scored but was flagged to be offside. They would regret their lack of capitalizing on their chances when Wolves man Kalajdzic scored from a Neto cross to end it 1-0.
