Set almost 100 years after Captain Kirk's 5-year Mission, a new generation of Starfleet officers set off in the U.S.S. Enterprise-D on its own mission to go where no one has gone before.

Gene Roddenberry nixed the idea, saying he wanted the characters to have conversations in the turbolifts before and after embarking on a mission. The in-bridge transporter concept eventually appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993).
Throughout the first five seasons of the show, the set of sliding doors located on the wall next to the center console in Engineering were part of a turbolift.
