Buckle your seatbelts, because things are about to get bumpy! Cars on the Road, a new series from the makers of the iconic Cars films, follows the main characters from the original 2006 film as they pack their bags and depart Radiator Springs for a cross-country vacation. Expect nothing but pure unpredictability and unexpected story twists when Lightning Mcqueen and Mater travel the extended roadways. And who knows, you could run into a few new people (or automobiles or planes) along the way!
This project is led by three respected directors: Steve Purcell, Bobby Podesta, and Brian Fee. All three were previously involved in Cars projects. Cars on the Road is executive produced by Marc Sondheimer, who has already worked with Pixar on projects such as the award-winning Coco. Jake Monaco, who also composed the music for Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, composed the series score.
The show follows Lightning McQueen and Hook on their road journey, where they meet new and familiar characters.

Cars on the Road is available on Disney+. The show will premiere on September 8, 2022.
Can You Stream Cars on the Road Without Disney+?
No, unfortunately. The Pixar-produced series is exclusive to Disney+. Mobile devices, smart TVs, online browsers, set-top boxes, and even game consoles can access the streaming platform. To subscribe to Disney+, you can choose between the $7.99/month plan and the $79.99/year package.
Cars on the Road PLOT
Cars on the Road is an upcoming series that follows Lightning McQueen and Mater on a road trip east to attend a wedding attended by Mater’s sister (who no one knows about). In true Cars form, spectators can expect to see anthropomorphic talking cars show up along the way – some friendly, some not so kind. The series follows the couple as they experience unexpected road trip shenanigans while seeing new places and meeting new personalities. Who knows, you could even recognize a few faces from earlier Cars ventures!
How Many Episodes Will The Show Cars on the Road Will Have?
Cars on the Road will include nine episodes, all of which will be released on the initial release date.
When Did Production Start The Project – Cars on the Road?
Cars on the Road plans were revealed at Disney Investors Day on December 10, 2020. It was announced that an animated series centered on Lightning McQueen and Mater exploring the country would be available for streaming in the fall of 2022. On the same day, the project also revealed the show’s directors, producer, and writer. Certain characters from the Cars spin-off films Planes and Planes: Fire & Rescue are expected to appear in the series on June 2, 2021.
The Cast of Cars on the Road?
Owen Wilson reprises his role as Lightning McQueen, a Piston Cup professional race car competing in the World Grand Prix in Cars 2. McQueen had a successful career until his retirement at the end of Cars 3 when he took on the role of mentor to teach a new generation of race cars. Larry the Cable Guy reprises his role as Mater, a local tow truck with origins in Radiator Springs. McQueen initially dislikes Mater in the first Cars film, but they soon become the best of friends.
Sally Carrera, the town attorney, and McQueen’s love interest appears in Cars on the Road as well (Bonnie Hunt). Cheech Marin returns as Ramone, the fashionable lowrider who never wears the same paint job again. Fillmore (Lloyd Sherr), the hippie Volkswagen, is another character to look out for. The show also includes new Cars, such as the monster truck Ivy, which is voiced by Quinta Brunson from ABC’s Abbott Elementary.
