Camille Vasquez, Johnny Depp’s hotshot lawyer, spoke out in a new interview Thursday about the actor’s choice to fight Amber Heard’s $2 million defamation conviction.
Vasquez told “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King that it was “reasonable” to imply Depp’s team would not be pursuing an Appeal if his ex-wife hadn’t first moved to dispute the jury ruling directing her to pay Depp $10 million in damages.
Depp filed his notice of appeal on Friday, aiming to overturn Heard’s solitary claim of defamation, which she won in their shocking trial last month.
Heard filed her own appeal the day before he did.
The 59-year-old “Pirates of the Caribbean” star is hopeful that the appeal will overturn the jury’s $2 million judgment to Heard for false and disparaging comments made by Depp’s lawyer about her.
Depp, of course, won last month when a jury in Fairfax County, Virginia, decided that Heard defamed him in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed essay about being a victim of domestic abuse.
Heard’s appeal was “anticipated,” according to Vasquez.
“I mean, she’s claimed she was going to appeal since the day she lost the trial,” Brown Rudnick’s lawyer explained.
Vasquez explained that they are filing their own appeal in order to “defend our client’s interest,” referring to Depp.
She also told King that she felt “fortunate” to be representing the celebrity accused of domestic abuse.
According to a source close to Depp, the verdict was “overwhelmingly good” for the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, who “believes that now is a time for both sides to move on with their lives and recover.”
“However, if Ms. Heard is determined to pursue more litigation by appealing the judgment, Mr. Depp is launching a concurrent appeal to ensure that the whole record and all relevant legal issues are considered by the Court of Appeal,” the insider continued.
Judge Penney Azcarate refused Heard’s motion for a mistrial earlier this month. A spokeswoman for Heard said in a statement regarding pushing through with the appeal — which will require Heard to post bail for the full amount she owes. we also think there was a lack of fair judgment.

Heard’s representatives have not responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Depp’s counter-appeal.
The lawyer, who became the trial’s breakout star, stated that it was critical for Depp to have younger counsel on his squad.
