BLACK ADAM Comic Con Trailer Sneak Peek

Dwayne Johnson made a thunderous debut to Comic-Con on Saturday, filling Hall H with ear-splitting thunder, smoke, and lightning. A costumed Johnson emerged from the darkness, appearing to float into the air above the stage. To applause, Johnson stated, “The DC Universe will never be the same again.”

WHEN WILL BE AIRED

After roughly 10 years of talking about it in various forms, Black Adam will finally hit theaters on October 21. We expect Teth-Adam to make his presence known throughout the’verse from there, maybe initially in a stinger sequence at the close of December’s Shazam: Fury of the Gods. He’s got to let Billy know he’s there at some point, right?

WHERE IN THE MULTIVERSE DOES IT TAKE PLACE?

For the time being, we assume it takes place on the same planet as past DC films such as Shazam!, Suicide Squad, or the Justice League  Of course, with DC-inspired films, film-to-film continuity is usually a source of contention. Batman, for example, does not exist in the same universe as Justice League or Shazam! Nonetheless, we believe Black Adam was created with the aim of sustaining the reality established in Man of Steel – fact, Johnson’s comments at both DC FanDome events indicate that a battle with Superman is something he wants to undertake. And, given his Shazam powers, Black Adam would be a truly powerful opponent in such a battle. At the same time, the trailer showcased a world that looked distinct from the past DC film entries.

Assuming the film is set in the more consistent DC cinematic universe, the introduction of the Justice Society expands on the world and its history. The first superhero team, which debuted in 1941, included DC heroes like Green Lantern, The Flash, Dr. Fate, Hawkman, the Atom, and others who banded together to combat the Nazi threat in the United States and, eventually, the world. Participate in the European Theater. As a result, the JSA has always had its roots in World War II, and we doubt that will change here. However, because the team is made up of legacy characters in later iterations, we expect this version of the squad to expose nearly a century’s worth of legacy, if only in passing. Also, we expect there to be a reason why they are dealing with Black Adam rather than the Justice League.

According to the trailer, the modern-day scenes will take place mostly in Kahndaq — or, possibly, an undisclosed Middle Eastern country with ties to Egypt. Regrettably, the region appears to be completely destabilized.

THE WORLD REQUIRED A HERO AND IT FOUND BLACK ADAM”

Black Adam first appears as the Wizard Shazam’s previous and failed apprentice in a single 1945 issue of Fawcett Comics’ The Marvel Family. Seeing potential in the young Egyptian warrior Teth-Adam, the Wizard bestowed upon him all of the powers he eventually bestowed onto Billy Batson. But when the power corrupted the then-“Mighty Adam,” who exploited his abilities to assassinate the sitting Pharaoh and take the throne, the Wizard nicknamed him “Black Adam” and banished him into space 5000 light years away.

When Black Adam reappeared five millennia later, he vented his rage on Billy and the rest of the Marvel Family. But the first story had a certain ending; the man dies quickly after being deceived into shouting “Shazam” and abandoning his powers.

When Fawcett’s Marvel Family — later dubbed the Shazam Family — got firmly entrenched in the DC Universe in the 1970s, he became a much bigger thing. Writers like Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway would expand on his one appearance to incorporate a deeper history in the region, a long-lost family, and a role as Captain Marvel’s Shazam’s archfoe.

Along the process, he developed into a fantastic anti-hero. His tactics were continuously questioned in the pages of the late 1990s/early 2000s JSA comic book, but his objectives were honorable. For a while, he also led the nation of Kahndaq; however, that rule was challenged by other nations and superheroes alike.

We include all of this history because the film will weave much of it together to tell the story of Teth-trip Adam thousands of years ago and his emergence in the present era. It will also include a Justice Society of America that is ready to fight his activities while yet, strangely, listening to his message. At the same time, as Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan) tells him in the trailer, he will be given the option of saving or destroying the Earth. But, when a thousand-year-old rage is united with the power of Shazam, can it be tamed enough to be heroic once more?

That is, of course, the internal fight Teth-Adam faces, and it appears he will continue to do so even while he battles insurgents, well-armed forces, and superheroes. Surprisingly, the teaser includes a discussion about heroes killing to save the day.

The Intergang crime syndicate is also said to appear in the film. If true, it’s an intriguing pick because they have significant ties to Darkseid, the alpha-predator seen on the other side of the Boom Tube in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the main antagonist in Ava DuVernay’s canceled New Gods adaptation.
