Prediction For Best Supporting Actress in Oscar Award 2024. The Best Actress race for Lily Gladstone (Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon) is already gone, making the category for Best Supporting Actress one of the most fiercely contested of the year.
Although I still have strong feelings for both Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks (both from Warner Bros.’ The Color Purple), we must consider what we already know and have seen. These two actors are still on the list of “to be seen” actors. The Holdovers (Alexander Payne, Focus Features), which had its Telluride premiere, received positive reviews for Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s portrayal of a sympathetic nurse with a unique background rather than for the movie’s star, Paul Giamatti. This month, Randolph, who created waves with the 2019 films Dolemite Is My Name and Only Murders in the Building, rises triumphantly.
A fantastic group of films made their chart debuts in September, including Niecy Nash-Betts and Audra McDonald in Ava DuVernay’s Venice/TIFF contender Origin (NEON), Erika Alexander in Cord Jefferson’s TIFF Audience People’s Choice winner American Fiction (MGM), and Juliette Binoche in Trn Anh Hùng’s Cannes-winning The Taste of Things (IFC Films), which surprised many by debuting in the category. Although Binoche hasn’t had a nomination in this category since 1996’s The English Patient (in Best Actress), it has been more than 20 years.

Even though it’s still early, a sneak strike might be planned. Sandra Hüller is now running for Best Actress in Anatomy of a Fall (NEON), Justine Triet’s Cannes Palme d’Or-winning film, and Supporting Actress in The Zone of Interest (A24), Jonathan Glazer’s Grand Prize-winning film from Cannes. Nearly a co-lead in Zone, Hüller might find herself nominated twice in the two most important non-English language films of the year by January.
The U.K.’s official entry for an international feature film is called Zone. However, France chose The Taste of Things over Anatomy, which infuriated critics and Oscar supporters equally, but Triet more so. The director criticized the selection on Instagram, labeling Taste as “boring.” It’s difficult to predict if that will harm Hüller or the movie, but I believe it won’t.
The 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10, 2024, and the Oscar nominees will be revealed on January 23, 2024.
