Big Bang Theory Creator Sets Record Straight On New Spinoff

Chuck Lorre, the creator of The Big Bang Theory, explains the current state of the proposed spinoff, vehemently disputing the original announcement of the program.

Chuck Lorre, the creator of The Big Bang Theory, defines the spinoff’s status in contrast to the initial statement. The Big Bang Theory universe was revealed to have a potential spinoff for the Max streaming service back in April of this year. It was stated that Lorre, who is also The Big Bang Theory’s executive producer, will be behind the new show. Thus yet, the project has not revealed any plot specifics.

In an interview for his new comedy Bookie, Lorre was questioned about the Big Bang Theory spinoff on TV’s Top 5. In response, the executive producer makes it clear that the new program is not always intended for Max and that the spinoff might not even materialize if the subject is not compelling enough to warrant it. The statements made by Lorre, which are reproduced below, run counter to an earlier press release that said that “a Max Original comedy series derived from The Big Bang Theory” would be available on the newly rebranded streaming service in the future.

This Update Is A Good Thing For The Big Bang Theory

Lorre has consistently said that he wouldn’t want to return to The Big Bang Theory unless there was a compelling story to support it, going all the way back to the show’s 2019 finale. In the end, young Sheldon proved to be exactly that, supported by a standout performance from Iain Armitage. The series has occasionally been noticeably more emotional and varied in its themes than its predecessor due to its single-cam comedic structure. Reiterating what made Big Bang work isn’t enough.

In an era where popular franchise reboots, revivals, remakes, and spinoffs are in high demand, that distinction is all the more noteworthy. Many of these attempts fall short of success even on their own terms, and very few are as successful as the original. Following a licensing arrangement, Netflix has already seen great success with Young Sheldon, while CBS has seen a decline in viewership. It achieved that, in part, by being independent. Whatever the next Big Bang Theory spinoff ends up becoming, Lorre hopes it will remain the same.

While it is true that fans of The Big Bang Theory would prefer to see more episodes, especially in light of Young Sheldon’s impending departure after season 7, it is preferable for the franchise to end on a positive note rather than pursuing a third series that might not have the same resonance or audience. According to Lorre, he’s thinking along the same lines.
