Philippe Vallancien, better known as Calvi, was a French cartoonist, caricaturist, and illustrator. Calvi left France-Soir in 1972 and began working for Le Monde under André Fontaine’s leadership. His writing appeared in a number of other newspapers, including Le Dauphiné libéré and La Dépêche du Midi. Simultaneously, he was commissioned by Le Figaro to illustrate political pages, which he did for the next 21 years. In 1981, Louis Pauwels approached him about collaborating with Le Figaro Magazine. He then began to paint, with the help of his wife, Françoise. Calvi illustrated Philippe Bouvard’s column for Le Figaro Magazine. Until 2005, he also illustrated the editorial column of Valeurs actuelles.
