Keri Ann Ruhi Hulme was a novelist, poet, and short story writer from New Zealand, descended from the Ki Tahu and Kti Mmoe tribes. In 1985, her novel, The Bone People, won the Booker Prize, making her the first New Zealander to do so. Isolation, postcolonial and multicultural identity, and Maori, Celtic, and Norse mythology are all explored in Hulme’s writing. Kai Tainui was another pen name she used. Hulme won a land ballot in 1973 and became the owner of a plot of land in the remote coastal settlement of krito in south Westland, New Zealand’s South Island. She was outspoken in her opposition to plans to expand the settlement with more housing or tourist attractions, believing it deserved special government protection. She identified as an asexual, atheist, and aromantic. Hulme’s given name was Kerry when she was born, but her family called her Keri; she changed her name to Keri in 2001.
