A medical sensor that adheres to the skin like a temporary tattoo could help coaches to monitor athletes’ metabolic conditions. Designed by researchers at the University of California San Diego and the University of Toronto, the lightweight and flexible tattoo is shaped like a smiley face to conceal the electrodes. The eyes of the tattoo sensor function as the working and reference electrodes and the ears served as connection points to a measurement device. The sensors can detect changes in pH or salt levels of the skin, as well as traces of potassium, sodium, and magnesium in response to metabolic stress from physical exertion. They can be made using a standard screen printer, and removed by towel soaked in warm water. The medical tattoo can be used to monitor athletic performance in sports training, but needs more testing before it is ready for the hospital or medical applications.
