TOKE MAKINWA: From radio show host to leading TV show anchor

When Toke Makinwa announced that the view from her 36th floor was bold and audacious on her 36th birthday in November 2020, not many of her fans or colleagues had the inkling of her aim.

“The view from the 36th floor is bold… Get ready for a series of “audacious” takeovers. It gets better from here. 03/11, the day I came to be. 36 is the year for signs and wonders. A series of audacious takeovers is about to happen this year, I can’t wait,” she had written on her social media accounts.

It’s almost a year since TM, as she likes to be addressed, made the statement and she has since achieved quite a handful of her set out goals in an audacious takeover of the TV show hosting scene.

Anyone can call themselves a presenter these days but it takes an unparalleled skill, unbreakable determination, and heaps of talent to captivate an audience of millions. These are what Toke has brought with her as TV show hosts with BBNaija’s The Buzz and Gulder Ultimate Search being the leading feats.

Many have come to admire Makinwa’s work rate as she’s spent quality time of her twenties – over a decade – to build herself up to this moment. In 2010, she was relatively unknown.

She was just the controversial co-host of Rhythm FM’s Morning Drive Show. But now, it is undeniable that the ‘Radio Girl’ has come a long way.

Delving into the world of TV

Toke Makinwa began carving her path as a TV host when she decided to anchor the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria beauty pageant in 2010 after many years behind the radio voice. She also co-hosted Flytime TV’s 3 Live Chicks with the late Tosyn Bucknor and Oreka Godis.

With all these working in her favour, she began her Youtube channel, Toke Moments, in 2012, where she hosted several guests across all walks of life. In 2015, she co-hosted the Moments talk show on EbonyLife Television with Michelle Dede and Bolanle Olukanni.

To appreciate her steadfastness, Toke won the NET Honours award for Most Popular Female Media Personality two years in a row.

And just days after co-presenting the BBNaija Season six finale with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Toke Makinwa nabbed the opportunity to be the anchor of season 12 of the Gulder Ultimate Search. Her presentation abilities were displayed as the anchor of The Buzz, an exclusive show into the happenings of the just concluded BBNaija Season 6.

Toke Makinwa is a Nigerian radio personality, television host, vlogger, lifestyle entrepreneur, and author. She is also an author with a book, On Becoming, to her credit. She has also featured in several movies and TV series.
