Itou Junji: Maniac
Those who have been watching anime or reading manga for a while should know about the uncrowned king of horror, Junji Itou himself. Due to his work over the years, he has gathered a cult following who appreciate his disturbing stories and creepy-looking art.
This anime is a collection of some of his most iconic short stories, including the famous Tomie, which has a fan base of its own. The story of Tomie follows the life of a young woman of the same name who is exceptionally beautiful. She is mysterious in her nature and causes men and women to act in unspeakable manners. Even when it’s time for Tomie to go away, she never really leaves and comes back every time to haunt others.
Now I recommend watching this alone at night for extra kicks, but you can also watch this in the morning and feel the same chill. The animation is also nice, considering this is just an anthology. Other stories apart from Tomie are also great and do not lose their signature creepiness.
Elfen Lied
Elfen Lied is a personal favourite that will force you to feel a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, helplessness, etc. As the story progresses, you will understand how doomed every character was from the beginning of this anime.
The story starts with the escape of Lucy, a special kind of human who is from the Diclonius breed. She possesses horns and deadly telekinetic abilities that can destroy her enemies in seconds. Being raised in confinement and tortured by the government, she finally breaks out amidst a massacre.
This anime is not for the faint-hearted or for people looking for light scares. It will surely damage you psychologically and make you question human nature and the cruel choices we make. So be prepared for endless misery, nudity and lots and lots of blood.
Mieruko-chan
Mieruko-chan masterfully blends comedy with horror by showing cute characters with grotesque monsters.
Miko has the power to see dreadful creatures who constantly pester her by asking whether she can notice them. Even though she can see them, she tries her best to ignore their existence to live an uneventful life. Living life like this is indeed not easy, and that is exactly what we witness through this anime. Miko acts as normally as possible in front of her friends, but she can only do so much.
The interesting thing about this show is you can never imagine it as being horror from its first look. But then suddenly, there will be a disgusting monster on your screen that will keep you awake at night. Plus, the story is also very funny with quirky characters and their antics.

Whenever the discussion of a horror anime comes to light, most anime fans would point towards Another. This series was able to blend psychology, mystery, horror and gore into a perfect combination to create a horrifying show.
The story follows Kouichi, who has recently transferred to his new school. Amongst all the students, he is specifically interested in Mei, a rather mysterious but strange girl with an eye patch. Weirdly, no one else, other than him acknowledges her existence because of a curse. Watch this and find out if Mei was the one cursing everyone and causing tragedies one after another.
You will not need a ghost for this anime, as the situation itself will scare you. Plus, the mystery will keep you hooked till the end with all the twists and turns. And did I mention it is a gore fest with some of the most disturbing death depictions?
Devilman: Crybaby
When Netflix first announced a new anime for the Devilman franchise, nobody thought that it would be so freaking good.
The story is about devils and their act of possessing humans to get a form for themselves. Thus, when Akira gets possessed by the devil Amon to save his friend Ryo, his life changes for the worse. Amon grants immense power to Akira and confidence to live his life, but the world around him starts to become hell when more insanity ensues.
If you do not mind gore, this is a great watch as rather than fearing devils at times, you will end up fearing human nature itself. Here, you will some of the most disturbing scenes that will scar you for life and make you cry for the fate of your beloved characters.

From the name itself, one can tell that this anime is about ghost hunting. Here, we see Mai and her friends exchanging ghost stories at her school. And that is when we get to know that there is a school building that no one likes to visit because of some otherworldly activities.
