Goosebumps Review (Episode 1 to 5)

Growing up in the ’90s signifies Goosebumps as the ultimate horror/Halloween treat. It was a book series with just the right spooks that will make you shiver and laugh. The adaptations of the book series over the years have done enough justice but, it is never enough! Which is why this Hulu release is something that would thrill everyone.

Goosebumps with the first five episodes offers us some dull moments with some slimy interesting ones. It is all about patience it seems as a viewer when it comes to this modern adaptation as the horror does not really hit you right away.

The series does not deviate from the iconic five-kids/teens story. So yes, we have the small town called Port Lawrence here, where the show is set and the main characters are a bunch of teens- Margot, James, Isaiah, Isabella and Lucas. Like most YA stories, we have this show spend a considerable amount of time setting up these characters in some capacity and letting us in on their family drama. However, the real Goosebumps-level story starts when these five end up throwing a Halloween party at someone’s haunted house.

Soon enough, the group starts being haunted by something which is shown by some iconic 80s and 90s scare tactics and, fans will recognize most of them being pulled right out of Stine’s books. But, what is this thing that is haunting them and what does it want? The group gets together in a very Scooby-Doo-like manner to solve this horror mystery while getting sucked into a storyline that goes back to the time when their parents were young.

For anyone obsessed with mystery YA, the show is everything we know from Pretty Little Liars reboot, Stranger Things, Nancy Drew, Riverdale and more. In all honesty, the series really focuses on being a YA series first and then a horror-comedy; which I think works fine for the viewers they are catering to in this era. Without substance not a lot of things last in 2023 and, Goosebumps is taking the right lessons to implement it in the series.

The show starts off slow but, never loses a beat to make us feel like we are in the 90s- which even includes the first song that plays in the rain when you start the first episode. Nonetheless, by the time you reach Goosebumps Episode 3 and 4, the story picks up resonating with the text more and welcoming you into a whole new world where fun and scary play the game.

Goosebumps Episode 1 to 5: Final Thoughts

Overall, Goosebumps is a sleeping star it seems right now. The show has started off on the right note but, it is unknown if it is getting enough attention right now as the month of October is filled with horror releases. Of course, we hope that the show continues to be the same and there is enough horror and comedy to binge on soon.

You can watch the first five episodes of Goosebumps now on Hulu and Disney+ Hotstar.
