Good Night World Ending Explained: Was The Reality An Illusion?

Good Night World Ending Explained: Good Night World came in like a surprise amidst some high-profile anime. Based on the manga of the same name by Uru Okabe, Good Night World (グッド・ナイト・ワールド ) is a psychological thriller that Netflix adapted into a 12-episode show animated by NAZ Studio.

This studio has previously worked on Id: Invaded, Hamatora: The Animation, Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, etc.

The opening theme for this anime is Black Crack by the famous VTuber Kuzuha [ja] of Nijisanji, and the ending theme, Salvia, is by Nornis, a vocal unit composed of Machita Chima and Inui Toko of Nijisanji. Here, we also see a lot of famous voice actors voicing the anime characters like Nobunaga Shimazaki, Akio Otsuka, Aya Endō, etc.

The ending definitely was not something I expected, and hence, here I am trying to explain what just happened.

Good Night World Ending Explained: Recap Of Last Episode

Good Night World Plot

The anime talks about the gaming world of Planet, where one can play games with unknown players, live in a completely different world of fantasy and escape being who they are. Here, one of the strongest families is the Akabane Family, with Shiro as the father figure/boss, May as the mother figure/healer, Ichi as the angry older sibling and AAAAA, as the peaceful younger sibling.

They are obsessed with this game and live together harmoniously. That is until their peaceful days get hampered by the notorious pirate chief Pico. The one rule that the Akabane family goes by also gets challenged, and they find out about each other’s real lives, leading to bad consequences.

Who was Sasumata?

Sasumata, who appeared with Leon as his subordinate, friend and close confidant, was later discovered to be an AI. And not just any AI at that, but the strongest one ever, aka, the blackbird itself.

It first appeared as a kind and carefree man who had a tall stature and a lanky appearance. But later, we see it as a fearsome persona who just wants to know about its origin. It is only later that we get to know that Sasumata was actually modelled after the beloved daughter of Shiro/Kojirō Arima. After she died, Kojiro felt guilty towards her as he was partly responsible for her death and was hated for it by his surviving family.

Perhaps to fill that gap in his heart, Kojiro created this AI and even named it after his dead daughter Aya.

What happened to Pico?

The fate of Pico is something that we really don’t know about in detail. Towards the end, we saw the human version of Pico in the virtual world that was supposed to be destroyed by Shiro. She was again in her high school appearance, and when she saw Ichi, she started to cry and confess her feelings.

Now, I believe that the lines between Reality and virtual reality blurred towards the end, so it is possible that Pico’s virtual self is still alive and will be in touch with Ichi in the future. At least, that is what I would hope, as she did not deserve to die like that.

Who was Hana Kamuro?

When Hana was first introduced in Good Night World, I suspected her to be May, who was a part of the Akabane family in the Planet world. But Hana was just the subordinate of Kojiro. Weirdly, her relationship with Kojiro was never properly explored, and at times hints of an intimate connection were made.

In the end, we got to know nothing about her past or how even Sayaka came to know her. Hana’s death also felt rushed and unnecessary, greatly diminishing the importance of her character.

Did the characters escape to reality?

The answer to this is very vague. Towards the end, the virtual world should have ended, and everyone should have returned to reality, and that is how it was portrayed in the final episode of Good Night World anime. But in the last few minutes, we see the red dragon that was killed by Ichi in the first episode appear in the real world.

So, there is a chance that the current world is not real at all. Either the humans are still in the virtual world, or the lines between reality and the world of the Planet have mixed so much that it has now become one single world. Watch this anime on Netflix.
