The Fall of the House of Usher Ending Explained: Short Recap of Last Episode

The last episode unravels the curse, killing Roderick Usher’s children one by one. During the 1980s, Roderick and Madeline trapped the then-boss of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, Rufus Wilmot Griswold, inside a wall. After killing him, they head to a bar to have an alibi. They sit with a woman named Verna, who works there as a waiter. Somehow, Verna knows that the duo killed Rufus. But instead of exposing them, she makes a deal with them.

Verna tells Roderick and Madeline that they can be the CEO and COO of Fortunato and live a wealthy life with no one doubting them for decades. However, when the time comes, their entire bloodline will die together. It means Roderick and his children have to die in future if the duo wants to get out of their current situation. The deal also mentions that Roderick and Madeline will die together. The twins agree to the deal without realising the gravity of it.

When Roderick and Madeline leave the bar and turn behind, the bar disappears. They built their empire, although with many corruptions and drugs responsible for killing millions. Over the years, they forget about Verna as they believe it was in the 80s, and their actions won’t have any consequences. For the brother and sister, it was as if the deal didn’t exist anymore. But as seen in the first 7 episodes, Verna brutally kills Roderick’s offspring individually.

Roderick confesses all this to Auguste Dupin as they sit in his childhood home. In the last episode, the only ones alive from the Usher family are Roderick, Madeline, Juno (Roderick’s wife) and his granddaughter Lenore. Auguste asks Roderick why he keeps ignoring text messages from his granddaughter. The Usher patriarch reveals that his granddaughter is also dead. He tells Auguste that Madeline had scanned Lenore for some cloning work (shown in an earlier episode). The clone is texting him the word “nevermore”, which is misspelt continuously.

The episode also reveals that Arthur Pym manages to get hold of Verna by injecting her. However, she comes back to life and tries to strike a deal with him. But Arthur refuses to make a deal and leaves. So Verna is still out there, looking for the siblings. In the last 20 minutes, Roderick makes another shocking confession to Auguste Dupin. Earlier, he called his sister Madeline for a drink and killed her like the queen she was! But that goes against Verna’s deal of the duo dying together.

Suddenly, there’s a lot of noise coming from downstairs. We learn that Madeline is still alive, badly injured and attacks Roderick. As Madeline starts strangling her mother, the house starts shaking and falling apart. Dupin runs outside and saves himself. The Usher twins die together under the rubble of their childhood home.

The Fall of the House of Usher Ending Explained: Who Survives from the Usher Family?

The only person to survive from the Usher family is Juno Usher. Verna doesn’t kill Juno as she doesn’t belong to the Usher bloodline. The company goes to Juno, who completely dissolves it and also cures her addiction to Ligodone. She started a rehabilitation centre for those addicted to the same drug. Lawyer Arthur Pym gets arrested for letting slide the bad things done by his client, the Usher family.

Dupin, whom Roderick deceived in the past, visits the Usher family’s graves. He doesn’t release Roderick’s confession and says there’s no point. Standing in front of Roderick Usher’s grave, Dupin says he’s retiring and returning to his husband and his kids. He calls himself a rich man as he has his family.

The Fall of the House of Usher Ending Explained: Who is Verna?

Ever since we first saw Verna, we hoped the makers would answer who she truly is! Even in the 80s, she was present, so why didn’t she age? It means she isn’t a human. How could she shapeshift, manipulate people, kill family members without getting caught and be present anywhere and everywhere? Mike Flanagan never answers the question about her true nature. However, she is also shown as the Raven in the show, so one can assume that Verna is the death itself.
