Lupin Season 3 Review (Short)

Assane Diop is a stylish deceiver, and in the third season, we see him doing the same. After the previous season focused on his father, the latest one tells us what went wrong with his mother, Mariama. Assane aka Lupin’s big plans are interrupted by his mother’s kidnapping, who he grew up believing is dead. Diop not only has to focus on saving himself, his ex-wife Claire and his son Raoul, but also his mother. A lot is at stake, and the enemies are cruel and hold a grudge against Assane. The way he smoothly gets out of every big trouble is something that keeps you hooked to the show.

What works for Lupin is we always know things will often turn in his favour. But the thrill is in watching his deception, and plans come into action. There are so many moments and turns we don’t see coming. Like the previous seasons, Lupin Part 3 also takes us to the past, where young Assane meets Bruno, Claire and others. The past plays a key role in helping us connect the dots with the present.

Lupin Season 3 Ending Explained

After the events of season 2, Assane Diop plans a big robbery – black pearl, which once got him arrested. He calls it his failed robbery. The first episode focuses on stealing the precious black pearl and is quite a thrilling watch, filled with unexpected twists and turns. Finally, Assane gets his hands on the pearl and wants to leave with his ex-wife Claire and son Raoul to live a peaceful life. But an unexpected phone call changes everything.

Assane gets a call from his mother, Mariama, who he thought was dead. A group of bad people, which we later find out is led by Jean Luc-Keller, kidnapped her. Assane’s childhood friend Manon was on Keller’s side. When Assane was young, Keller was the one who looked after him and his friend Bruno. However, one day, he makes both the boys rob a jewellery store. Keller has been grooming these boys to do bad things. Hence, they decided to run away, but Manon stayed loyal to him.

In the last episode, Keller enters Claire’s apartment to seek revenge on Assane. However, Claire tricks him by sneakily leaving a voicemail on her phone. Keller believes they aren’t here and loses his chance to harm them. After attacking Keller’s man, Assane Diop finally reunites with his mother, Mariama. Mariama tells Assane that her boss stole half of her wages when she was in prison. Hence, she couldn’t return when he was young. She got caught and arrested when he tried to steal to get enough wages. Hence, she had no choice but to abandon him.

Claire calls Raoul’s coach, Alex, and tells him she knows he’s Assane. She tells him about Keller and everything that went down. It’s a family reunion for Assane, as he is with his ex-wife, son and mother. But the big threat is still looming over him. Mariama makes Assane promise that he won’t play any new tricks anymore, and he agrees. But in the absence of Claire and his son, she tells her son that she wants into his plans.

The mother-son duo devise a smart plan to deceive the Minister of Interior. They both disguise themselves as different people and manage to steal the Minister’s burner phone. The duo escape using a boat, where Assane calls the Minister. He threatened the Minister to release the names of unlawful people connected with the government. To stop him from exposing the government, he demands the Minister to release Manon.

Assane Diop and Manon finally have the conversation that didn’t happen many years ago. Assane tells Manon what Keller did to him and Bruno and why he left everything behind. Manon trusts Assane and agrees to help him trap Keller. She calls Keller and tells him to meet her at the Palace de L’Étoile. Assane makes sure to drop hints that will let Guedira know his whereabouts. Guedira calls Sofia and tells her Assane will be at the tourist place with the Black Pearl.

When Assane meets Keller, they first get into a world of wars. Assane smartly takes the Black Pearl from Keller, places it in an orange rose, and gives it to a random lady. The cops arrive there and arrest Keller for the murder of Ferdinand Marchal. But that’s when another big twist comes in. Bruno meets the lady later and takes the rose from her, saying that Assane is his date, who’s upset as he arrives late. He wants to give him his rose back so that things are fine. The lady innocently gives him the rose with no clue that there’s a million’s worth of Black Pearl.

To everyone’s surprise, Assane plays no more tricks after the Black Pearl is safe. He lets Guidera arrest him so his family doesn’t face so many troubles. He also remembers his ex-wife Claire’s advice to turn himself into the police if he wants his family to be safe. Assane puts forward certain conditions in front of Guidera when he gets arrested. He wants his family to be safe, so Keller should be imprisoned for his crimes. Finally, he wants the cops to release his friend Benjamin, aka Ben, who was arrested in the earlier episode.

Further, Clair, Raoul, and Mariama arrive at the train station to leave Paris. When Benjamin arrives, he gives Claire a letter written by Assane, who tells her he won’t join them. He decided to do the right thing to protect his family.

Lupin Season 3 Ending Explained: Lupin Season 4 Villain Revealed?

Assane Diop’s third request is he wants to read Lupin’s books in his cell. But the episode ends on a twisted note, hinting at another season. Assane receives a picture of his younger self holding Maurice Leblanc’s Arsene Lupin book, The Cagliostro’s Revenge. We learn that Hubert Pellegrini, who frames Assane’s father, Babakar, is in the same prison as him. Hubert was arrested in season 2. Even Pellegrini has started to learn Lupin’s ways. So, in the next season, we might see the story of Assane vs Pellegrini again.
