8 Movies Like The Nun 2

The Nun (2018)

If you’re excited to watch the sequel, then you must watch the first venture into Valak’s territory, which will definitely give you an idea about who the demon is as well as Sister Irene’s identity. The battle between good and evil is presented in this movie fiercely, and it also ends on a rather delicious cliffhanger that is sure to come up in the second outing. Starring Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Bonnie Aarons and Jonas Bloquet, the first film, directed by Corin Hardy and written by Gary Dauberman, has a runtime of 96 minutes.

The Nun follows Father Burke and Sister Irene, who travel to Romania, wherein a nun is found hanging outside their monastery. Although confused about what could’ve happened to result in such a tragic situation, the two figure out that this is more than just some misunderstanding – there are terrible unholy secrets at play, ones that were supposed to stay forever hidden under the walls of the monastery but are now trying to come out at any chance that it gets.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

When an unidentified corpse turns up at the mortuary one night, father and son coroners Tommy and Austin think this is just another day at work. However, what starts out as a very normal night soon turns into a nightmare for both of them as more and more strange and unexplainable occurrences start to happen, which threaten their very lives.

This creepy supernatural horror film came out of nowhere in 2016 and left a very uncomfortable mark on the minds of audiences. From the creepy music to the amazing performances to the unidentified corpse (played by Olwen Catherine Kelly) – everything about this movie screams simple but impactful. Its short runtime is a positive for this impact, and just 86 minutes, it’s a very entertaining and equally scary watch. The film stars Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox as the coroners and is directed by André Øvredal.

The Conjuring (2013)

The first film in the universe, this supernatural horror film, started it all and left everyone in awe! The 2013 movie cemented Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the famous Ed and Lorraine Warren and the storyline gave us chills not only because of how smartly the jumpscares were placed but also because of an emotional bond that the audiences came to share with the Perron Family and their plights.

In 1971, Ed and Lorraine Warren are asked to help the Perron family with a possible haunting. At first, not believing it to be anything but a phenomenon that can be explained using science, the Warrens realise that there is more at play in the Perrons’ new house than they expected. Soon, the Warrens and the Perrons have to fight against the evil Bathsheba, who will stop at nothing before claiming her house back and taking a young life in the process as well. The film stars Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor and has a runtime of 112 minutes.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

This is a supernatural horror film with a legal drama twist, and it makes it better! Instead of having back-to-back moments of fear and adrenaline, the movie uses its legal drama moments to slow the film down, so when you see Sabrina Carpenter’s mind-blowing portrayal of a woman possessed by the devil, you will be left scared out of your mind. This movie would have been remiss without Carpenter and might even be too slow to be scary. But it’s a mixture of good acting, a paced script and a tense atmosphere that keeps everything intact.

The 2005 film follows the legal battle of Father Richard Moore, who has been charged with negligent homicide after an exorcism results in the death of 19-year-old Emily Rose. Emily’s life is told through flashbacks throughout the trial, and as the audience sees her going through this horrible pain and suffering, Moore and his defence attorney also seem to fall victim to the demons who preyed on Emily. Starring Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson, the film is directed by Scott Derrickson and has a runtime of 119 minutes.

The Last Exorcism (2010)

Any list is remiss without a found footage entry, and this found footage supernatural horror film starts out innocent enough, with talks of mental health crisis and a documentary crew filming a rogue priest. However, the movie soon goes right off the rails and ends up insanely erratic and frantic and before you know it, you are left in a creepy situation where things simply go from bad to worse.

The 2010 film follows Cotton Marcus, whose faith in the Church is lost after a personal tragedy. When he is called to a farm to conduct an exorcism on Nell, he does a fake exorcism and tells the family that he has rid her of her demons, thinking that she is suffering from some mental health issue. However, soon, Marcus realises that there’s more happening behind closed doors and that Nell might just be entwined in something far more dangerous and disturbing, which might bring his faith back. The film stars Patrick Fabian and Ashley Bell is directed by Daniel Stamm, and has a runtime of 87 minutes.

Evil Dead (2013)

The reimagining of 1981’s horror-comedy classic of the same name, this 2013 film is absolutely terrifying. The familiarly creepy surroundings, the equally creepy music and practical effects that will leave anyone’s skin crawling, the movie is a horrifying tale of possession and what happens when you don’t realise that your junkie bestie is a Deadite!

Mia and her friends arrive at her family’s remote cabin in the woods to help her get over her heroin addiction. What starts off as a struggle to get clean quickly turns into a struggle for survival after the group finds the Necronomicon, and one of them opens it and reads out the unholy passage. Mia quickly gets possessed and threatens her friends’ lives in order for the devil to be reborn once again. Directed by Fede Álvarez in his feature directorial debut, the film stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore.

Final Destination (2000)

If there is any movie that has scared a generation of people into not doing very particular things, then it is probably this franchise. The first film is the classic, but I think everyone will find themselves uncomfortable riding behind a truck carrying logs, thanks to the second film! It’s not only creepy, but it also makes you believe that Death might just be after you after you find yourself safe in the midst of a freak accident. This franchise was on to something!

The film follows Alex Browning and his high school class as they find themselves running from an unknown assailant after his premonition prevents a select few from dying a fiery death on the plane on their way to Paris. However, how do you save yourself when Death itself wants to settle the score? Directed by James Wong, the film stars Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith and Tony Todd.

Poltergeist (1982)

This cult classic relies solely on creating and holding on to a tense atmosphere without the use of jumpscares. Thus, if you’re someone who enjoys a disturbing atmosphere that might just feel like it will choke you, the original poltergeist will keep you hooked.

Steven and Diane Freeling live a rather normal life with their three children when suddenly, one night, their youngest daughter starts conversing with their TV. Soon, more and more bizarre incidents start to take place, ending in Carol Anne disappearing, only her voice heard through the TV. Distraught, the parents try to find her, only for them to realise that there is more at play at their house than they were previously made aware.
