Bleach Thousand Year Blood War Part 2 Episode 5 Review: Strength And Weakness

The Visards are out to play in Bleach Thousand Year Blood War Part 2 Episode 5, as they go up against the wrestling Sternritter. Let’s see how it went in this review!

Bleach Thousand Year Blood War Part 2 Episode 5 Overview

What is there to be said about Bleach that hasn’t been said before? It is one of the most popular anime in the West of Japan of all time and is considered a part of the Big Three, a trio of anime widely recognised as having been a part of popularising the medium of anime. The show is back after a hiatus of nine years, as its first run ended in 2013. The newest season of the show is being developed by Studio Pierrot, the studio behind the original series, as well as other giants such as Naruto and Tokyo Ghoul.

The second part of the final arc of Bleach is directed by Tomohisa Taguchi, who has been involved in the productions of Persona 4 The Animation and Twin Star Exorcists, and the series is based on a manga written by Tite Kubo. This Episode is also referred to in original Japanese as Bleach Sennen Kessen-hen Ketsubetsu-tan Episode 5 (Bleach Sennen Kessen hen Ketsubetsu tan Episode 5) and Bleach TYBW Part 2 Episode 5. Kensei and Rojuro are interesting characters to build an episode around. For one, they are Visards, meaning they have shared Ichigo’s immunity to having his Bankai stolen all along. With this ability, they would and should have been critical in the first attack by the Quincies. However, Rojuro only had a single scene to him, and Kensei was entirely absent from the first part of Thousand Year Blood War. Since they became captains, it was their first opportunity to showcase their strengths and prove what they were all about. Of course, they wasted no time in proving why they were so ignored to begin with.

They got absolutely destroyed in about three moves from Mask de Masculine, who was the only good part of Bleach Thousand Year Blood War Part 2 Episode 5. Kensei has always been a weak character, both in his character writing and strength, as depicted in the show. His Bankai might be the least flashy out of all the ones we have ever seen, and it isn’t even effective enough to afford to look that bad. He carried himself like a hard man and scoffed at his own lieutenant before losing the battle quicker than Shuhei did. Now that’s a captain to be proud of.

Rojuro, on the other hand, is not a bad character. He is flamboyant and fun-loving in a way not many characters are in the show, and his battle with Mask was much more interesting than Kensei’s. For one, his Bankai is gorgeous and looks like it could certainly be a worthy adversary to any Sterritter out there. The technique Mask employed to break through him was tremendous and made a lot of sense with how Rojuro’s Bankai worked. Rojuro dug his own grave by telling him how his Bankai worked, but our boy is nothing if not cocky and self-assured.

There was an interesting switch-up employed in this episode as Mask de Masculine truly believed for himself to be the good guy in this battle, more than most other Sternritter battles we have seen. They’ve all believed they were on the right side of history, but he took it further than anyone else. He was also depicted as extremely strong, which in turn was intended to portray someone who defeated him as extremely strong. It did not work, and this felt like the lowest point of the entire season so far.

A character was just told the true name of his Zanpakuto and ran in to take hundreds of times the damage Rojuro and Kensei took before demolishing Mask. The entire fight felt extremely anticlimactic and did not do justice to the sacrifices that had already been made to get Mask in this state, to begin with. This power did not seem earned and was the closest thing to an “asspull” we have seen from the show in quite some time. Granted, this entire episode involved relatively minor characters and isn’t going to have much of an impact on the rest of the season, but it could have been done much better than it was.

Verdict

Bleach Thousand Year Blood War Part 2 Episode 5 was the weakest episode of the entire season so far. It featured a lot of uninteresting fights that ended in the most predictable way they could. Let’s hope that this trend starts and stops right here.
