The Uncanny Counter 2 Cast: Jo Byeong-kyu, Kim Se-jeong, Kang Ki-young and Others Seem Familiar? Here’s Where You Saw Them Before

Is the uncanny resemblance of the The Uncanny Counter 2 cast members still perturbing you and making your braincells race ahead while you wonder why they all seem so familiar? By the way, you’re not wrong in assuming that because the show has a multi-faceted stellar group of actors including Jo Byeong-kyu, Kim Se-jeong, Yoo Joon-sang, Yeom Hye-ran and others leading its story, especially with the 2023 sequel welcoming in some new faces whom you’ve possibly already met with in the their older projects.

To push your mental chaos aside, we’ve compiled this list of the series’ leading lot and put down some of the most celebrated roles they’ve starred in before coming onboard tvN’s supernatural ship helmed by the Counters. Directed by Yoo Seon-dong, the South Korean drama (경이로운 소문 2) is based on the webcomic authored by Jang Yi, and has taken over the time slot previously occupied by See You In My 19th Life starring Shin Hye-sun, Ahn Bo-hyun and others.

The Uncanny Counter Season 2 Cast and Where You May Have Seen Them Before

COUNTERS

  • Jo Byeong-kyu or Cho Byeong-kyu

Reprising his role as So Mun from the from the former season, Byeong-kyu leads the main cast of action thriller series. However, this isn’t the first time the actor has left a mark on the audience with his acting chops. While he’s acted in several movies, K-dramas and web series, some of his memorable performances were captured in the following titles-

1. SKY Castle

Playing the role of Cha Ki-joon in the 2018 K-drama series alongside renowned actors like Kim Byung-chul, Park Yoo-na, Kim Dong-hee and Yoon Se-ah, all of whom are members of the Cha family among the many upper-class families living in the affluently extravagant residential area called SKY Castle. By the end of the season, he openly starts voicing out his dislike towards his father’s extreme methods of teaching.

2. He is Psychometric

While Kim Kwon donned the suits of the older version of the character, Byeong-kyu stepped in to play the younger Kang Sung-mo in the 2019 fantasy thriller series. Living on with his cold exterior, his character saved the young Lee Ahn from a fire that killed his parents. Throughout the season, the two grow mutual feelings of care for each other and Sung-mo even becomes Ahn’s adoptive brother and provides for him.

3. Dokgo Rewind

Although this 2018 action web series has grown synonymous to its poster child EXO Sehun’s identity, Byeong-kyu, too, played one of the main characters in the lot, sporting the portrayal of Kim Jong-il a bullied high school with student superhuman abilities who uses pens as his main weapons against the enemy.

4. Hot Stove League

In the 2019 sports drama series, Byeong-kyu stood tall alongside Namkoong Min, Park Eun-bin and Oh Jung-se as the fourth main cast member with his character’s never die attitude. Essaying the role of Han Jae-hee, he worked alongside Eun-bin’s character in the same operation team of the Dreams baseball club. Initially, his connections helped him get the job, but eventually he earns his spot with the rest of the team and works hard for the baseball’s team behind the scenes.

  • Kim Se-jeong

Not only is she a prolific actor, but also a K-pop idol who even participated early on in Mnet’s survival show Produce 101. Her former presence in girl groups IOI and Gugudan is often overshadowed by her acting career. She’s still active as a solo artist in the K-pop sphere and is even set to make her comeback soon after a long hiatus from that artistic window. There’s just no way that you would’ve missed out on her if you’re a dedicated follower of K-drama releases. Coming back to play Do Ha-na from Season 1, she’s also been seen in the following shows-

1. School 2017

Playing Ra Eun-ho, Se-jeong optimistically took charge as an 18-year-old student with sky-high aspirations of becoming a webtoon artist.

2. Business Proposal

That “Samantha and Rachel” scene has a fandom of its own by this point. Her character sketch of Shin Ha-ri has truly won over the audience. Not only is her comedic timing in the show flawless, but so is her onscreen chemistry with Ahn Hyo-seop’s Kang Tae-moo. The 2022 rom-com series based on a webtoon is now one one of her most commercially successful series so far.

3. BUSTED!

Starring alongside Yoo Jae-suk, Park Min-young, Lee Sung-gi, Oh Se-hun and others, Se-jeong has been one of the main cast members of the South Korean Netflix Original variety series which requires them all to settle into the shoes of celebrity sleuths and solve mysteries at hand.

  • Yoo Jun-sang or Yoo Joon-sang

Other than being the butt-kicking Ga Mo-tak, and the assistant cook at Eonni’s Noodles, in both seasons of The Uncanny Counter and So Mun’s mentor in the first season of the show, the distinguished actor also actively participates in musical theatre. As far as his notable roles in onscreen Korean content are concerned, here are some of them-

1. The Boys

Call it fate or not, he joined the main cast of the 2022 Korean film based on a true story alongside his The Uncanny Counter co-star Yeom Hye-ran.

2. Hahaha

The 2020 dramedy film even entered that year’s edition of the Cannes Festival ceremony and won the Prix Un Certain Regard. Joon-sang came forward as Bang Joong-sik, a film critic.

3. The Day He Arrives

Stepping up as Seong-jun, a professor of film studies, Boon-sang led the 2011 black and white film, which premiered at the 64th Cannes Festival.

4. My Husband Got a Family

Opposite Kim Nam-joo’s Cha Yoon-hee, the respected actor donned Terry Kang’s role, i.e. Yoon-hee’s husband in the 2012 rom-com family dram series.

5. Alchemy of Souls

As part of the mainstream drama circle, Joon-sang’s name has also come up for playing Park Jin, a supporting character in the widely applauded fantasy period dram series. He even shared the screen with Yoo In-soo’s Park Dang-gu.

Ps. If you’d looked closely, you would even remember his cameo feature in Episodes 12 and 13 of The Penthouse Season 2 as Jung Doo-man, aka Na Ae-kyo’s politician boyfriend.

  • Yeom Hye-ran

The veteran actress also began her acting career with theatre first before moving to her screen debut in the early 2000s. In both seasons of the ongoing action supernatural series, she’s stood strong as Chu Mae-ok, one of the leading Counters who also poses as a chef at Eonni’s Noodles for the rest of the usually common world’s eyes. With her healing powers, she really is the voice of reason among the lot and like a mother figure to the younger Counters. She’s become a common K-drama face familiar to many, and the below listed titles are only some of the many she’s been a part of –

1. Memories of Murder

The 2003 Bong Joon-ho film marked her screen debut.

2. Guardian: The Lonely and Great God or Goblin

Despite her antagonistic role as Eun-tak’s (Kim Go-eun) maternal aunt, who always bullied her for her sister’s death insurance, she still had the audience chuckling at her antics.

3. When the Camellia Blooms

4. Mystic Pop Up Bar

5. Juvenile Justice

6. The Glory

Ps. It’s almost as if half the The Uncanny Counter Season 2 cast had a mini reunion on the sets of Alchemy of Souls because even Yeom came on the show for her special appearance as mysterious middle-aged woman.

  • Yoo In-soo

Even though he’s one of the many new faces meeting us in Season 2, In-soo is no newcomer to the K-drama scene. Playing Na Jeok-bong’s part as the rookie clumsy Counter, the actor has previously been spotted in quite a few famous K-dramas.

1. Strong Girl Bong-soon

2. My ID is Gangnam Beauty (Cameo)

3. Sweet Revenge

4. All of Us Are Dead

5. Alchemy of Souls

6. The Good Bad Mother

DEMONS

  • Kang Ki-young

Taking the lead as one of the major demons in Season 2, Ki-young was introduced to us as Hwang Pil-kwang, a third-level demon with invincible set of powers that can absorb the Counters’ abilities. Yet I can assure you that you’ve already made acquaintance with the actor in at least one of his former supporting roles across many K-dramas, probably in a brighter light than Pil-kwang would approve.

1. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo

He played the adorable role of Bok-joo’s (Kim Sung-kyung) uncle who worked at the chicken restaurant with her father but had aspired high of becoming an actor.

2. W

3. What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim

The Best Supporting Actor trophy at the 2019 Soompi Awards was marked in his fate as he won the audience over with his role as Park Yoo-sik in the 2018 romantic comedy series novel of the same title by Jung Kyung-yoon.

4. Extraordinary Attorney Woo

Without any doubt, this one’s definitely his most loved portrayal so far.

5. Exit (Movie)

He even won the Korea Best Star Award (organised by the Korean Film Actors Association) in the Best Supporting Actor category for the movie in 2019.

  • Kim Hieora

Walking beside Ki-young as yet another demon in charge, she plays Gelli Berherd, a speedy third-level demon. She’s primarily been known for her theatre career until she got her big break with The Glory. But the 2022 Netflix original series probably wasn’t the first time you saw here. She’s taken on several cameos across different K-dramas like Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Hospital Playlist 2 and more.

1. The Glory

As part of the 2022-2023 Netflix series’ supporting cast, Hieora essayed the role of Lee Sa-ra, who eventually grew up to be a famous abstract painter with a severe drug addiction problem.

2. Bad Prosecutor

Related to the Kangsan Law Firm, Hieora’s Tae Hyung-wook stepped in as Seo Hyun-gyu’s (the firm’s representative) bodyguard and personal secretary in the 2022 legal drama series led by EXO’s D.O. aka Doh Kyung-soo.

The Uncanny Counter 2 is now streaming on Netflix. Each new episode is broadcasted on every Saturday and Sunday at 9:20PM KST on tvN. You can read our reviews of Season 2 episodes here.
