Invasion Season 1 Recap

When the world is hit with horrible devastation, the lives of everyone are shattered and altered forever. In between this, we have 4 separate people/groups whose journeys we follow as they try to find safety in the midst of a global crisis.

The Malik Family

Aneesha, her children and her husband get the shock of their lives when, one fine day, their neighbourhood shakes from a supposed earthquake. However, they soon learn that their lives, already pulled apart thanks to Ahmed’s infidelity, are about to get much more complicated when they are forced to flee from their home in search of shelter. On the way, their relationships are constantly tested. However, they are able to find shelter away from upstate New York at a military shelter.

Unfortunately, when she tells the military about the weapon that she used to kill one of the Aliens, it results in an all-out war while her family is getting transported to the Pentagon. This results in them getting stranded in the middle of a forest and Ahmed getting shot while trying to save his family. After his death and trying to flee from a group of gun-wielding maniacs, she comes across a forested area which is covered by alien spores.

As they flee and take shelter at an abandoned house in the middle of the forest, Aneesha consoles her kids about their father’s death, and although Sarah is inconsolable, Luke seems to be more matter-of-fact about the entire thing, even coming off as standoffish. Later that night, Luke throws away the alien weapon that they had previously used and looks up at the sky, smiling, as his mother, walking up from sleep and finding Luke nowhere, is left concerned about her son as she looks up to the sky.

Mitsuki Yamato

JASA communications specialist Mistuki Yamamoto finds herself in her worst nightmare when her girlfriend, astronaut Hinata, goes to space, and then her ship promptly goes up in flames. Devasted, Mitsuki doesn’t want to give up on the hope that Hinata is somewhere out there. In the midst of cities turning to dust, however, no one wants to listen to anything that she is saying. As she fights with her superiors to let her reach out to Hinata, hoping that she is alive, she is able to make contact with Hinata, or something that resembles her voice, after not being able to figure out their language at first.

Unfortunately, as her colleagues figure out, this isn’t Hinata – it’s the aliens who are simply trying to manipulate the humans to do their bidding by emulating Hinata’s voice. In the end, Mitsuki stalls the aliens by talking to Hinata for some more time as the US Military sends up atomic missiles against the spaceship, by tracking the signal that Mitsuki was using to communicate with Hinata, and destroying the ship.

Having said her final goodbye to her love, Mitsuki seems to be more at peace as she travels with Ikuro Murai away while listening to stories about Hinata’s childhood and eventually goes to her house to take in her memories. The next day, she makes her way out to discover Hinata and herself and takes shelter at a monastery wherein, upon further inspection of the alien communication, she realises that the worst is far from over.

Billy Barratt

In Britain, Billy and his schoolmates are on their way to an excursion when they are met with an accident which ends in their bus driving off a cliff, gravely injuring their lone chaperone and stranding them in the middle of nowhere. With no other assistance, they are headed by the school bully, who never gives up the chance to bully Billy, who suffers from violent seizures.

A result of these seizures, however, are his drawings that are based on the things that he sees while he’s seizing. As their food supplies start to dwindle and the kids find no way to keep going in their hopeless state, Billy takes on the responsibility of taking them home and successfully does so, thanks to his resourceful nature.

Once back in London, however, he and Jamila go meet his home, who heartbreakingly has died at their home. Devastated, they go to the hospital where Jamila’s mother works. On the way, Billy interestingly realises that the visions that he sees are a part of the alien invasion and that he is linked to the aliens in some way. He and Jamila also come across Trevante during this time and convinces him to help them get to the hospital and that they have the power to stop this madness once and for all.

At the hospital, Trevante convinces a nurse to induce seizures in Billy, who thereafter gets visions and realises his unique link to the aliens. However, this triggers the aliens to make their way towards them and in a hopeless and scary standoff, Billy is able to tap into their shared consciousness and make the aliens stop moving, giving them a chance to escape.

Unfortunately, this entire ordeal takes a toll on him, and Billy succumbs to the strain that he has put on his brain. As his body lies lifeless, heartbroken, Jamila and Trevante, go their separate ways in an attempt to rebuild their lives once more.

Trevante Cole

US Navy Seal Trevante, reeling from his traumatising past, faces a tough challenge when his team gets a distress call, and they head out to investigate. Unfortunately, this distress call results in his team coming face to face with the aliens, and they wipe out his team, leaving him as the sole survivor. Confused as to what he saw and now with no one to help him, Trevante decides to go back to the US in any way possible and crosses continents and ends up in London, wherein he meets Billy and Jamila.

He believes their claim that Billy can see inside the aliens’ minds and decides to help him get to the hospital. After the entire ordeal with Billy ends, he is able to find a way to go back to the US to his ex and begs for her forgiveness and start their lives afresh. The last scene is of them at the beach, wherein they see something truly devastating.

Invasion Season 1 Ending

In the end, all the different people we have been following till Invasion episode 10 realise that the aliens’ aggression is far from over. In fact, this might just have been their first round of attacks. Although they are able to nuke that one spaceship, As Trevante sees at the beach and as other researchers find in some cave in the Amazons that the aliens have a stronghold on Earth and are feeding off of its resources. They are here to stay, and it would take much more than one nuclear missile to get rid of them.

The aliens, by taking the Earth’s resources, corrupt the atmosphere and the people. Maybe they have taken over Luke as well, as he smiles up at the sky eerily. Their main aim is to corrupt whatever is in their path. However, their end goal is unclear at this point.

Invasion is streaming on AppleTV+. Season 2 premiers on August 23.
