Good Omens 2 Review: Neil Gaiman and Douglas Mackinnon are back as showrunners and executive producers of the comedy-fantasy TV series, with Mackinnon acting as the director for all 6 new episodes. The highly-anticipated second season sees David Tennant and Michael Sheen returning as Crowley and Aziraphale, respectively and takes place after the incidents of last season. Others include Each episode of the new season has a runtime of around 45 minutes.

Good Omens 2 Plot

When a very-naked Gabriel, archangel of Heaven, turns up suddenly at Aziraphale’s bookstore, both he and Crowley find themselves in a tough spot. Unable to throw him out and realising that keeping him around will be more difficult than he previously thought, the angel and demon try to find a way to fix the mess before they themselves are unable to get out of this entangled and complicated mess!

Good Omens Season 2 Review

There is something about Good Omens that fills you with happiness and warmth. Although the season talked about armageddon and the death of everything, the chemistry between David Tennant and Michael Sheen was infectious. Their friendship, which gave birth to many calls for a secret romance, is, of course, the beauty and the centre of the show and gives meaning to everything that happens surrounding them… which is a ton.

At the end of the first season, Good Omens had decidedly ended for good, and you could feel that it was a Limited Series from the way the episodes came to be. However, thanks to fans’ (like me) interest in the series, we now have another season of some more cute Crowley and Aziraphale chemistry while also trying to solve a convoluted mystery.

See, the thing is, when you are following two people who are celestial beings and have been present since the beginning of the Earth, you do get to make a ton of different stories using history and putting them at the centre of it all. However, the second season feels like a different tone than the first and can be thought of as a completely different chapter altogether – Good Omens Season 2, decidedly, has no connection to the events of the first season, other than the fact that Aziraphale and Crowley have successfully stopped Armageddon.

I say all this to mean that although I was thrilled to learn of another season, I must admit that Good Omens Season 2 feels unnecessary, and maybe sometimes, good things should come in small packages so that we can cherish them better. This isn’t to say that the second season isn’t good, but it feels a bit forced and extra, but thankfully the chemistry and the cute vibes between the protagonists make up for most of those negative feelings!

Michael Sheen is just so cute as Aziraphale that you can’t feel anything but happiness whenever he’s onscreen. The angel is supposed to be a pure-hearted and kind person, which Sheen makes the best use of – his aura is so nice that watching him makes your heart warm. Crowley is the exact opposite, and his sway-y walking and no-nonsense decision-making make him Aziraphale’s proper partner.

Good Omens Season 2, thus, with all of these positives, focuses on a variety of different celestial things, the main one being that Gabriel has walked into Aziraphale’s bookstore butt-naked, and there’s something foul afoot. Aziraphale, of course, has given Gabriel shelter, going against Crowley’s wishes, and soon enough, both realise that Hell and Heaven have conspired something truly awful that they have themselves in the midst of.

So, this itself is a lot of stuff happening, but then we also have a romance brewing in the background that we sometimes delve into. With that in mind, there is, as usual, a lot happening in Good Omens. The best part about the show is its depiction of Aziraphale and Crowley’s relationship and the past that has brought them here. It’s also the most interesting part of this season.

Unlike last season, however, this season’s danger doesn’t feel too dangerous. If anything, it feels a bit forced. The humour is still there and saves the series during most of its repetitive and tiring moments, but there is just no immediacy and most of the time, the season feels a bit all over the place.

The first season had many moments that also dragged a bit, but this season has far too many such moments that feel a bit like it’s a filler and maybe could’ve worked with a few minutes less to mull over. However, the politics are still there, and we are consistently made aware that although Heaven and Hell couldn’t be more different, they are similar, too, in many ways. But, again, it’s not new. We saw that all too well last season and got to know almost everything about it already.

So, sometimes, you feel a bit confused as to why we are getting the same thing in a different package. However, Good Omens season 2 continues to broach topics involving sexuality, ignorance, blind faith, politics and gender roles in the most open-minded and pacifist way possible. If Good Omens sometimes feels repetitive this season, it more than makes up for it with its acting, humour and correct representations. I know I keep mentioning how cute Aziraphale and Crowley are and how well their characters are portrayed, but I think it’s not enough.

Fans of the series will be happy to watch that people constantly take them as lovers, but they themselves never really define anything, which is great. They are celestial beings, after all. They are friends, maybe more than that, but does it really matter what they are defined as? Relationships are complex and sometimes fluid, and we get to know many times throughout the series that Aziraphale and Crowley always keep each other first. It’s so sweet to watch these two bicker like an old married couple and support each other like friends.

Other than these two, we have Gabriel, who is going through a crisis of his own. The why and how is what the show comprises of this season, and it’s a nifty little mystery that binds everything together. Jon Hamm, who returns as Gabriel this season, plays his role swell, and you wouldn’t be able to realise that last season he was such a conniving man. If anything, he looks every bit like a lost puppy with a big heart!

The other characters don’t really have much of an effect and can sometimes be forgotten. We interestingly have a different Beelzebub this season, and the reason is absolutely on-point. Nina Sosanya and Maggie Service return in different avatars this season, and I must say that last season’s sisters were more prominent, albeit they are seen more this season.

Good Omens 2 Review: Final Thoughts

Good Omens season 2 is not as good as its previous season, and there are a lot of moments that seem repetitive. That being said, the series is cute, the protagonists are great as usual, and there are moments that the story will really keep you waiting for more.
