Gora 2 Review: Ritwick Chakraborty’s Eccentric Detective is At It Again!

Gora 2 Review: Gora 2 (গোরা) is a comedy-detective TV series created by Sahana Dutta, directed by Joydeep Mukherjee and stars Ritwick Chakraborty, Suhotra Mukhyopadhyay, Usashi Ray, Manali Manisha Dey, Mimi Dutta, Ananya Sen and others. The series has 8 episodes, each around 25 minutes long.

Gora 2 Plot

Amidst a growing pressure to get married, Gora tries to solve the case of several child deaths in the city, which starts to get more and more complicated the more he dives into it. Will the eccentric detective be able to find out who is murdering these little girls?

Gora 2 Review

Ritwick Chakraborty’s detective is back and more eccentric than ever. The mystery aside, his character is absolutely insane to watch and funny as heck, although he is completely intolerable for most people who have to interact with him on a regular basis. I think if he weren’t as smart as he is, he probably would’ve been viewed very differently, even by us as the audience. That being said, his character truly is quite colourful and fun, and his habit of forgetting everything and misremembering things is very funny.

However, I do feel that they go a bit overboard with his eccentricity. Constantly fat-shaming the quite sweet policeman and slapping and repeatedly abusing Sarathi for no fault of their own will threaten to get on your nerves. However, even during the worst of it, detective Gourab manages to be humorous somehow. It is almost odd how much you will feel entertained by his antics, even though, in real life, you would probably never associate yourself with someone like him.

I think I mentioned something similar in the last season’s review – his character is funny, but after a while just feels very problematic. The balance is sometimes not there, which just nibbles at your patience just a bit. On top of that, the blatantly sexist remarks get old the moment Gourab starts to rattle on about the “female gender” and will immediately make you hope that he never gets married to any woman. Thankfully, Sarathi is the best part of the duo, and I felt like I understood him as a person and exactly what he feels in every moment. His sarcastic comments are also quite funny.

The mystery that Gora 2 presents to us is quite interesting and watchable as well – two different strings of murders that feel like they are different but might have a common thread connecting them. It mixes well with the humour, and you’re constantly left confused thanks to the myriad wrong names that Gora spews every few minutes. It is interesting how two different but similar strings of murders curiously come together when we slowly move towards the end.

The series, thankfully, gives us a moment during these discussions surrounding the murders wherein Gourab isn’t absolutely insufferable. These are moments where you are allowed to think and wonder what could’ve happened, and to the series’ credit, it does a good job at bringing forward twists and turns and a whole host of characters who will keep your mind occupied. I feel like the tale isn’t as twisty as the series would like to make us believe. But thanks to Gourab’s eccentricities, we are forced to find ourselves a little all over the place, wondering where to look and where not to!

The last twist, however, is quite interesting and completely comes out of left field. The mystery takes a bit to get solved, but it’s quite fun to see the layers of the onion come off one by one. It’s also quite shocking a revelation, a gruesome take on murders. Thus, you are left to wonder why by the time you reach the eighth episode. The series does a good job coming up with such a horrifying and baffling crime and will keep you guessing till the last minute.

Ritwick Chakraborty does a fantastic job as a smart and cunning detective who is absolutely crazy and insufferable most of the time. Chakraborty is great in the series and balances these different moments well. On the other hand, Suhotra Mukhopadhyay is fun as Sarathi, and his irritated and annoyed rants and jabs are my favourites. I think the general public will relate to him well. Everyone else, including Manali Manisha Dey’s surprising character, plays their roles well. Although, I am left with the question of whether Gourab ended up getting married in the end.

In the end, we are left with the question of whether or not our antagonist was truly at fault. They were, but just the little bit of information that the series provides behind their motivations is enough to make you feel a little sad. Although you can’t find it in your heart to forgive or forget, it’s still a sad end and makes you wonder about the state of our society.

Even the family that we focus on throughout the show’s runtime will make you feel disgusted – although they might not be the type to harm children, they are still equally pathetic. Thus, we are left with the lingering feeling of whether or not we have truly progressed as a society.

Gora 2 Review: Final Thoughts

Gora 2, in spite of its protagonist’s annoying habits, is a fun and interesting watch that looks into the horrors that society still holds on to this day. The series is tense, and the myriad twists and turns are quite engaging to watch. Although the protagonist’s odd habits are hard to swallow sometimes and might make you want to skip forward, I still had a fun time watching the show and was left wondering who the culprit could be and why they are doing what they are.

Gora 2 is streaming on Hoichoi.
