It is a little weird to see something intimate like sex within a setting that has absolutely nothing to do with it. Since the genre doesn’t really expect there to be a ghost most times, it gives the opportunity to use a tool like physical intimacy to allude to more psychological horror that plays with our understanding of normalcy. If you’re looking for something with a Silvia Moreno-Garcia energy, this movie will definitely do it. Think old England, lots of problematic white people and their conversations about ‘preserving the bloodlines.’ While this film doesn’t fall into that trope too deeply, the aristocratic horror stories, along with the subtle sexual undertone, create the perfect movie with some sapphic tension and unexpected violence pretty quickly. How inviting can someone’s clutches be when they’re holding a chalice of blood?

Ragini MMS

Paranormal Activity has nothing on this film because everyone is concerned about what is happening, including the guy who is supposed to be in control of all of this. While it initially seems that Ragini might be duped into trusting her partner, it becomes exceedingly clear that there are forces at play here. Honestly, the found footage energy adds to the realism and hypes up the fear even more during the film. We want to root for the main characters to escape, but none of these characters gives us any reason to, except Ragini.

Last Night in Soho

Period pieces are fantastic, add murder, mystery, thrill and some enticing fashion, and it becomes the perfect blend of horror and sensuality. There is something so alluring about the time that the protagonist is talking about that she gets pulled into the scene only to note the kind of horrors that took place at this time, rendering her incredibly confused. What starts off as a fun little quip of her brain ends in such gruesome detail that it totally makes sense for this movie to be as gritty and inviting as it is.

The art world is a stunning place to set a horror film because everything is so incredibly pretentious and hostile that if there were no horror elements, it would be surprising. Additionally, the way Jake Gyllenhaal brings his sensibilities to the psychological thriller and horror genre is so brilliant that this film manages to breathe life into different facets just through the visuals. Once again, it is the sensual invitation in most of these films that make the ending and the events scarier than ever.

Pearl

After we saw the horrors in X, with the killing and the incredibly detailed descriptions of sex, we see this movie which is a continuation of the cinematic universe of the movie. We have a deranged female character looking to make it big in a cutthroat environment. Her sexuality is just the right weapon to make destiny bow down to her. In this film that places one woman’s female rage above all, it is so satisfying to see something not that removed from ourselves, twist itself into something incredibly horrifying.

Additionally, when things are happening at a time when people are having fun, especially of the carnal kind, death gets to people, making escape the only lucrative option. Starring Mia Goth, David Corenswet, Emma Jenkins-Purro and others, Pearl is currently streaming on Showtime.
