Aseq Movie Review: Plot Summary

In Aseq movie on Jio Cinema, Ronnie is going through a breakup with his ex Priyanka. He is in dire need of money and meets up with his friends at a club. Outside the club at night, Ronnie meets Lail, who has been waiting for her new roommate. Ronnie tells Lail it is unsafe for her to be alone late at night and asks her to stay at his place for a while, and she agrees. The duo reach home and start talking, and suddenly, bizarre things happen to Ronnie.

From returning to the past to some strange sounds and incidents, Ronnie, Lail, and his friends Aadi and Sarim also have eerie experiences. Ronnie and his friends believe that his ex Priyanka has done some black magic on him. She has sent a Jinn called Aseq (Aashiq), who gets obsessed with humans and would do anything to have them. So who exactly is the Jinn, and what do they want? You will find out in the end.

Discussion and Analysis

To be straight, Jio Cinema’s Aseq movie is missing the ‘WHOA’ factor. In the first 20 minutes, you predict how things will play out. The screenplay is plain and packs in no jaw-dropping moments and mystery. The horror is funny, and the movie has no good jump scares. The romance between Ronnie and Lail has no passion. The Jinn never gets a chance to show its obsession that would make one uncomfortable.

The movie confuses you whether it’s a story about a Jinn, a love story between Ronnie and Lail or a friendship story of Ronnie, Sarim and Aadi. Several shots of the three men standing together remind you of classic friendship shots in Dil Chahta Hai or Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. The cinematography also fails to present the fear on screen. A scene where the Jinn is sitting on Ronnie’s chest is shot from a low angle. But it is so dark that all you see are two shining balls, which turn out to be the Jinn’s eyes. I had to brighten the screengrab to see how the main villain of the story looks like.

Aseq makers have added every clichéd essence of horror movies – someone not believing in black magic/ghosts, some baba who will help the characters and sleep paralysis like nightmares. Yet, it terribly fails at frightening you or stressing you out with anticipation and creepiness, which should be the primary purpose of such movies.

Along with the spooky visuals and suspense factor, the movie fails to give us unsettling background music. The sound effects are crucial to build up more fear in viewers. Even the VFX wasn’t good, especially on the Jinn. It looks like the Jinn has a horrible make-up and hair day. Also, when will we get over the evil spirits just screaming at humans for no reason? The outside world is already loud, and the screams only add more to the noise.

Coming to performances, the actors tried their best to look serious in this laughable story. Most of the time, it felt like the actors are reading their lines and not saying them like they mean it. The dialogues are also outdated. Also, the fact that the main characters took so much time to figure out who’s behind all this makes them look dumb.

Aseq Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, the bland and ludicrous storytelling takes the thrill out of watching Aseq. The story is extremely predictable, and every character is one-dimensional. We are never told how such a Jinn comes into existence and what their main motives are, in-depth. The information that they’re in search of love isn’t satisfactory. We are never shown the brutalities that could occur because of such Jinn.

The movie is now streaming on Jio Cinema for free.
