MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 17 Review: Pressure Test Guest’s Dish is a Sight to See and Feast to Taste

MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 17 Review: After anticipating for months, the show premiered its fifteenth season with wonderful home cooks ready to win the grand title. On the judge’s panel, we have the previous season’s professional chefs, Andy Allen, Melissa Leong, and late Jock Zonfrillo, back on the set to taste and deliver excellent critics. Surprisingly, it doesn’t stop with them because other professionals like Jamie Oliver will also be making cameos to test the contestants with their best.

The participating contestants are Adi Nevgi, Alice Han, Amy Tanner, Andrea Puglisi, Antonio Cruz Vaamonde, Brent Draper, Cath Collins, Declan Cleary, Grace Jupp, Jessica Perri, Larissa Sewell, Malissa Fedele, Phil Conway, Ralph Kahango, Rhiannon Anderson, Robbie Cooper, Rue Mupedzi and Theo Loizou.

In the previous episode’s cereal challenge, Alice, Declan, and Grace failed to impress the judges. Hence, they were moved to the pressure test where they had to recreate Donato Toce’s Messinetta. When the guest Chef opened the clotch and revealed his Messinetta, the cooks and of course, I, had the same expression. Honestly, that was one of the most satisfying and aesthetic desserts I’ve ever seen. The vanilla gelato piped perfectly giving the wavy texture and the three layers of tempered thin chocolate were wholesome to look at.

The contestants then had a closer look at it and Grace thought only three components are there. However, when Donato cut his Messinetta, everyone was shocked to see three layers of gelato. The center part had a strawberry filling, then the second layer was made of vanilla gelato and the final was chocolate. The three cooks were stressed since they had to closely recreate a Messinetta as perfectly as that. They were given the recipe, ingredients, and 4.5 hours to finish it.

The timer started and the contestants started preparing. During the making stage, the judges as usual went around to give their input passively. First up, Grace’s Vanilla Gelato Mixture didn’t have enough flavour. So Andy Allen asked Grace whether she thinks everything is proper in her mixture. Grace became perplexed and went over to taste Alice’s mixture. She then realized her mix wasn’t sweet enough.

When Declan was making tempered chocolate, it didn’t come out properly. The chocolate strips had a bend in them. Donato Toce advised him that it would be much better to make another one than go with it. Alice began fiercely and completed her steps properly. But she forgot about the vanilla gelato mixture in the ice cream machine. This caused her gelato to become frozen and she had to wait until it melted.

Sadly, Alice had to remake the mixture from the start because the frozen gelato melted and became too watery. The judges were also worried about her vanilla gelato’s outcome since there were only a few minutes left. Somehow, the contestants finished their dessert and the moment came for it to be tasted.

The judges loved Declan’s preparation since the flavours were spot on. The look of the dessert wasn’t quite bad as well. Alice’s Messinetta disappointed the judges because the textures and flavours didn’t catch well. Finally, Grace’s dessert also impressed because they loved her flavours and her Messinetta was close to Donato’s.

The judges saved Declan which ultimately shows he still has the immunity pin for another day. Grace was also saved leaving Alice to get eliminated.

MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 17 Review: Final Thoughts

Donato’s dessert was absolutely the most aesthetically pleasing dish I’ve ever seen. The insides and the outsides were done with perfect proportions and that is a wonder. This shows how outstanding of a chef he is.

Speaking of the elimination, I’m glad Declan wasn’t eliminated because if he had been, obviously he’d have used the immunity pin which would have compelled me to believe this is a scripted show. So good news on that. Nevertheless, Alice’s elimination is saddening because she’s a fantastic cook. Hopefully, she will start her own food business where she will flourish.
