Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 7 Review: Terrible Logic

Tanjiro is extremely close to killing an upper moon in Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 7. Let’s see if he can accomplish that in this review!

Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 7 Overview

One of the most popular anime of our time, Demon Slayer, is back on our screens with the Swordsmith Village Arc. The newest series follows the 11-episode Season 2 of the show, which you can read all about here. The arc follows Tanjiro as he makes a trip to the swordsmith village to discover why the sword creator won’t remake his sword and meets something mysterious while there. Ufotable is the studio behind Demon Slayer’s anime adaptation, and Haruo Sotozaki will direct the series. It is to be noted that only the first episode was a double-length episode, followed by standard episodes in the future. You can read our review of the Mugen Train movie while you’re at it. The episode is also known as Kimetsu no Yaiba Katanakaji no Sato-hen Episode 7 in original Japanese.

Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba Season 3 Episode 7 Review- Awful Villains

Demon Slayer villains have always had a peculiar aura about them. They’ve varied a lot in quality over the years, as we have seen some great ones in Gyuutaro and Daki, alongside many boring characters like the Train Demon from the Mugen train movie (and anime). The quality of a villain does not seem to affect the screen time they get on the show, as almost all of them will at least get half an episode (mostly after they’ve already been trounced) to display the atrocities that happened to them that led them to commit atrocities as well.

I’ve never been a fan of these parts of the show, as I couldn’t care less about a Demon’s life after they’ve already been defeated. That’s also why I prefer villains like Akaza and Gyuutaro, as their tragic past hasn’t been revealed yet, or the reveal happened before they got defeated. Still, the motivations for all the villains previously have at least made sense. In Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village Episode 7, we learn the motivations of one of the two Upper Moons our characters have been fighting, which could not have been sillier.

Seriously, that demon is absolutely delusional, and his delusion appears to be intentional on the writer’s part to make Tanjro’s side come across as a little more reasonable, even though it absolutely wasn’t necessary. The Demon Slayer Corps has been nothing but extremely sympathetic so far and did not require a conversation like this to gain sympathy. As this also came from a demon that’s stupidly overpowered while still getting his ass handed to him on a platter by three teenagers, we have officially reached the oddest narrative decision of this season.

On the other side of the battle, we see Tokito stuck in a truly desperate situation against the vase demon, as the water veil he is in does not allow him to swing his sword to free himself. We see some truly claustrophobic and suffocation shots, as the tale of his and Haganezuka’s desperation and dedication was told quite nicely. Tokito hasn’t had much of a character so far, as he is just a kid who has gotten himself stuck in that deep because of being a prodigy and hence doesn’t really know how to wade through the world. His character should get some new layers when we see his story.

The animation in Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 7 was also perhaps just a notch lower than what we’ve seen in the show so far. Still, it was made up by the shot composition and amazing music design behind this entire episode. The CGI can look a little off sometimes if you care about all that, but I don’t mind. Anything that can reduce the animators’ workload is a plus in my book. Haganezuka had a fantastic moment in this episode – one where we learned something about him that we weren’t ever supposed to. Just don’t tell him that.

Verdict

Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 7 felt just a sliver below the other episodes in this season so far. The characters introduced or focused on weren’t strong enough to carry the episode.
