Insomniacs After School Episode 5 Review- Slice Of Life Heaven

There is nothing in this world better than a great slice-of-life anime, and I will stand atop this hill till I perish. My most beloved piece of media of all time is a slice-of-life anime, and I’ll be damned if any anime of this genre gets underappreciated, especially if they are as good as Insomniacs After School. This episode was absolutely magical and one of the best things that has aired this entire season. I could not fit all the praises I have for it in just one review, but I sure as hell am going to try.

The show features extremely realistic depictions of what being a teenager feels like and how being around teenagers feels like to people who don’t belong in that age group or don’t fit in despite being a part of it. Most of them aren’t malicious, but the raw, chaotic energy coming from them can be devastating if it is not channelled towards a healthy direction. I really like the depictions of Ganta and Isaki’s classmates here, as none of them is depicted as malicious and is still able to portray themselves as massive annoyances once you put yourself in Ganta’s shoes.

Speaking of Ganta, he doesn’t deal with his insomnia very well and is almost constantly miserable. He isn’t the most fun character to watch, but he is extremely relatable and engaging in that way. He is good at many things, and his passion shines through in everything he tries to do. He is the character who represents the awful effects of insomnia on a teenager. On his own, he wouldn’t have been a great character to follow for 12 episodes. Luckily for him, he has the perfect person alongside him to take him s far as he can get.

Magari Isaki is at least half of the reason this show is so insanely watchable and interesting. She radiates kindness and positive energy in a way that makes you forget that she is suffering from the same issues as Ganta. She is also very upfront about her feelings, and this episode featured a scene where the duo tell each other how the other has helped them out, and it was the sweetest, most gentle thing you would see this entire season. The two characters have chemistry by the tons and complement each other very well.

There was another star in this episode, and it was the production of it. This episode was a slice of life heaven in the way it displayed even the tiniest intricacies of the trip that the students went in. The footstep noises, the depiction of cooking and helping each other out, the silly games that kids that age play and were anglicised tremendously well, and most of all, the marvellous animation that adorned the skies and the sees of the second half of this episode were a treat to the eyes and a spellbinding experience that will be hard to forget. This was a near-perfect episode of television, and it doesn’t get much better than this.

Verdict

Insomniacs After School Episode 5 was a fantastic watch and one of the best episodes of this entire season. If you value animation, slice of life, or anime in general, give this a watch.
