Flower 8th Win: BLACKPINK’s Jisoo Wins Big at SBS’ Inkigayo

In another striking victory for the Korean Pop Idol, fans have already decreed the matter joyous by having ‘Flower 8th Win’ trending on Twitter. Moreover, this win was also sweeter because members from SEVENTEEN were seen grooving to the music when it was playing in the background. The video won against two very close competitors, including IVE’s Kitsch and I AM. SBS’ Inkigayo is a South Korean music programme that originally started in 1991, was cancelled and then revived back in 1998, after which it has been running consistently.

The show is hosted by MONSTA X’s Hyungwon and actress Ki Ji-eun (One Dollar Laywer), who are the presenters this season. Initially, the show had different segments, and they still do most of the time. However, they abolished one very important segment called Take 7 and instead introduced a new chart system in 2013. They involve contributions from all kinds of consumer consumption, including but not limited to Broadcast, Digital Sales, Physical Sales and Video views. They also count some votes happening live and some pre-meditated votes as well.

While Jisoo may have won big in this episode, they were joined by other groups who either made their debuts or their comeback performances in this episode. NCT DOJAEJUNG made their subunit debut with the song Perfume, while XODIAC made their debut with Throw a Dice. Meanwhile, Jueun from DIA also made her solo debut with the song Easy Breezy. Taeyang from BIG BANG also made their comeback with a medley between Shoong! and Seed. Korean Rock Band Xdinary Heroes also shook the stake with performances of the song Freakin’ Bad.

The artist was not physically present at the show, but she did share a grateful story on her social media with a bunch of hearts and, no pun intended, flowers. In the video, Jisoo is seen wearing incredibly opulent clothing, hanging around in fancy places enjoying herself. But the idea is that she was the sweet innocent person who would be put off by the smallest thing and was impressed by something that trivial too. But now, she realises that the true response would be to put the onus on the other person who decided to leave in the first place.

A still from Flower MV

It sends quite a strong message and sets the tone for how her music has been growing, moving from BLACKPINK to her solo performances. This insightful approach to self and music probably makes the song so relatable. Adding to that, the melody and the rhythm are catchy enough to hold attention and keep audiences entertained.
