We’re finally coming to the main villain, Nicholas Bilton’s story, after him making only cameos so far. The episode starts with Decime, Bilton’s foster daughter listening to the anti-capitalist singer Tyrone Downs. Decima stops listening since Bilton dislikes Downs (we’ll know the reason later).

The episode takes place in 2070, and Bilton is in his 70s, looking young. He’s clearly done surgeries, and artificial intelligence is assisting him. Bilton is finally under heat for ecocide, which is causing the destruction of the earth with his business. Until his trial ends, he appoints Martha Russell as Alpha’s temporary CEO. Lucy Adobo, the lover of Tyron Downs, is the prosecutor who wants Bilton to pay for his acts.

Tyrone Downs has previously protested against Alpha’s mining process, and that’s why Bilton hates him. Moving on, we’re at the International Criminal Court Tribunal, where three programmed judges (AI) are taking up Bilton’s case. The first witness is Rebecca Shearer, the one from episodes 1 and 2, who worked for Menagerie 2100. She exposes that Bilton is the reason why fauna species are extinct.

However, Bilton’s lawyer, Ariel Turner, states that Shearer has been using Alpha’s benefits and is now turning up against the CEO for a crime he didn’t make. He also states that she is mentally unstable. This makes the court dismiss her testimony, and soon after that, she kills herself.

Meanwhile, Martha is dealing with Alpha investors, and to keep up the share prices, she introduces the technology of Bilton called Newcomen, which will help in bringing down the carbon dioxide levels. In the day 2 trial, Jonathan Chopin (Gita’s husband and Rowan’s father) testifies against Bilton. He claims that Newcomen, created by Bilton, isn’t exactly to heal the world but to make things worse so he can get more wealth.

Ariel Turner once again accuses Chopin by bringing up the story of Rowan and Gita illegally using Alpha’s drones to release calcium carbonate in the air that polluted the atmosphere. Jonathan is also dismissed from the court as the judges find his allegations personal. All this while, Decima is watching the trial live, and she pitches in with a message to help her father. Bilton destroys it since he doesn’t want anyone to know about his daughter, who is adopted from the Sydney refugee centre.

Then we see a flashback where Bilton discusses with Martha how people hypocritically think that comfort doesn’t come with a cost. We’re also shown Rebecca struggling to get proper medical help due to Alpha. To acquire Alpha, Martha decides to leak information to Lucy about Newcomen. She hints that Newcomen is an idea stolen by Bilton, and the device is highly functional.

On day 3 of the trial, an ex-employee of a bank linked with Alpha brings in the name of Matafele Kabua. Apparently, Bilton has used the loans given out to women for Newcomen’s functions. It is figured that Kabua is the scientist behind the device’s function and that he is also the real father of Decima. This revelation shuns Decima and makes her realise that Bilton has stolen her from her origin. Kabua is dead, and there are chances of Bilton being the reason behind it.

Now that Newcomen’s truth is out, Martha makes the device public. We see another flashback of Bilton discussing how as far as the earth is pushed to purgatory, the rich can gain more wealth. Finally, on the fourth day of the trial, Lucy realises she isn’t going to win. She states that despite knowing how technology is ruining humankind, people tend not to act on it. Bilton successfully is let out as not guilty, and it could be because of his technicians hacking the ICC system.

Extrapolations Episode 8 Ending

Bilton visits Lucy to trigger her emotions. He says that Martha killed Tyron Downs, which ultimately reveals that the current Downs is only an AI loop of the artist. When Bilton leaves, Lucy asks Downs whether she should pursue Martha for her sins, to which the AI replies that the past isn’t going to change.

Lucy meets Martha and reveals what Bilton revealed about her. Martha is extremely pissed and decides to bring everything to light. She shares her testimony and introduces Decima to the public while Lucy takes care of the broadcasting process. Bilton loses his power in Alpha, and the ICC once again brings his case up and convicts him.

In the end, we’re in the year 2071, where things are getting a lot better. Lucy gives a speech to the people that they all should change, or else people like Bilton will keep ruining them. Bilton is in a jail that’s in outer space, where he is seen watching the Earth.

Extrapolations Episode 8 Final Thoughts

Though the criminal Nicholas Bilton is imprisoned, the ending isn’t satisfying however, this is reality. Bad people like him tend to enjoy their punishment still. The series season 1 delivers a very strong message, and every episode is mindblowing. Truly an eye-opening series to stream.
