Great Expectations Episode 5:

Great Expectations Episode 5 brings us closer to the end of this season (we say this season because we are expecting a lot more to unfold in regard to this book-to-screen adaptation). This episode shows us where Estella is heading with the marriage and, also her relationship with Miss Havisham. Meanwhile, Pip and Jaggers’ corruption conspiracy surrounding Drummle also comes to light.

The episode opens with Pip smoking up, thinking of Miss Havisham in his delusional state when Jaggers lands up in front of him and takes him away for ‘work’. This work, as we all can assume by now, entails getting the shipment papers signed by Drummle putting him in a position of danger and Jaggers just becoming more powerful. But, with all the power he has, turns out his companion and accomplice- Pip isn’t as safe as one might assume him to be.

We see say this because our old friend, the convict Compeyson makes an entry in this episode. He almost seemingly threatens Pip, holding a knife against his face when we realize that the convict is looking for something. Pip does not go unharmed in this situation.

The other characters in this story- Estella and Miss Havisham have tension rising between them. Estella declares that she is not ready to choose her husband yet. Due to this, Miss Havisham does not reveal the second potential option that she has in mind in regard to Estella’s marriage. It turns out to be Herbert- the person she essentially calls to have dinner with Estella in the episode.

Great Expectations Episode 5: Final Thoughts

Overall, Great Expectations Episode 5 had a lot to unpack. It is taking us somewhere more concrete. However, with multiple storylines playing side by side without much congruency, the show still does not feel mature enough. By the end of this season, that might turn out to be the quintessential complaint that viewers have from this show.

However, the actors have really pulled off the characters well which makes the show enjoyable to watch. But where this show is heading towards can only be told once we reach the end, which as we know isn’t far away.
