Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 1 Review: A New Adventure Begins!

Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 1 brings a lot of the same quality of the previous seasons back onto the table. Let’s see how the new story began in this review!

Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 1 Overview

One of the most popular anime of our time, Demon Slayer, is back on our screens with the Swordsmith Village Arc. The newest series follows the 11-episode Season 2 of the show, which you can read all about here. The arc follows Tanjirou as he makes a trip to the swordsmith village to discover why the sword creator won’t remake his sword and meets something mysterious while there.

Ufotable is the studio behind Demon Slayer’s anime adaptation, and Haruo Sotozaki will direct the series. It is to be noted that only the first episode was a double-length episode, followed by standard episodes in the future. You can read our review of the Mugen Train movie while you’re at it. The episode is also known as Kimetsu no Yaiba Katanakaji no Sato-hen Episode 1 in original Japanese.

Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba Season 3 Episode 1 Review- A Familiar Start

Starting this review as the episode did- talking about the Infinite Palace where Kibutsuji Muzan resides. It is hard to tell if it is because of the intricate way it is designed in the source material or if it is the way Ufotable animates it, but it is one of the most beautiful places that has ever been animated in a show such as this. This was the kind of place that added more weight to the conversation that was happening in it, and it was an interesting one, to begin with. Muzan shaming his extraordinarily powerful demons in the way he did was a sight to behold.

Some of Demon Slayer’s storytelling can feel flat at times, but this wasn’t one of those times. The proper introduction to the Upper Five Demon Moons was great and told a really compelling story about competition within their ranks and their treatment at the hands of Muzan despite their ranks. This season seems to put a lot more focus on these guys, especially the Demon with the rank of Upper #1, who has more to do with Tanjiro than any other Demon he has faced so far.

Speaking of Tanjiro, this season’s start has been remarkably similar to Season 2, with him being rescued from the brink of death by the Demon Slayer corps. In fact, almost the entirety of his section in Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village Episode 1 felt like it was a rehash of Season 2 Episode 1, where Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and inosuke were also depicted as recovering before heading off into their new adventure. Of course, there were a few changes, but the setup was largely the same.

The key difference arose when it became time to go to the Swordsmith Village, as this time, Tanjiro and Nezuko had to go in there alone due to the nature of it being extremely secret and only him having the need to go there. This makes a lot of sense, and not having Zenitsu’s annoying mug around is going to give a huge boost to this season, alongside just being a good change of pace. This should also do wonders for Tanjiro’s character development and his relationship with Nezuko.

There were some new characters introduced in Demon Slayer Season 3 First Episode, and they are a compelling bunch. Mitsuri, the Love Hashira, just had the most fan-service type of introduction that you can have in a show like this, but there are layers to her character that are beyond immature titillation. Ufotable has also maintained the level of quality we have come to expect from this show and them as a production studio, and it is easy to see that exciting times await fans of the show.

Verdict

Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 1 was a great, if a little standard and by the numbers start for the show’s latest season. It set the pace and story nicely, and this season will likely be as exciting as the previous ones.
