Japanese crime thriller drama Invisible ending explained unravels the truth behind the reaper’s intention to kill Anno and leaving detective Shimura alive to be burdened and blamed for his co-detective’s death. Invisible (インビジブル) is a Japanese police drama written by Yoshihiro Izumi, Ken Tsuchiya, and Takafumi Kosaka. The story narrates a strict police officer getting entangled with a crime coordinator so that he can arrest all of the criminals. The series has ten episodes in total and each has a runtime of between 45 to 55 minutes.

The series consists of an ensemble cast of many talented actors. Issey Takahashi, as Takafumi Shimura, takes up the lead role alongside Kou Shibasaki as Kiriko/Invisible. Other supporting and recurring cast includes Makoto Tanaka, Yoshi Sakou, Kiyoshi Isogaya, Akane Hotta, Motoki Nishimura, Moe Yuki, Taizo Harada, Kyosuke Tani, Kenta Kiritani, Kinari Hirano, Ito Ono, Ryouta Murai, Rihito Itagaki, Takenori Goto, Ginnojo Yamazaki, Kento Nagayama, and more.

Invisible Ending Explained

After Invisible Kiroko joins hands with detective Shimura, a series of events happen that lead MPD to find culprits behind unsolved cases. Meanwhile, the real reason behind Shimura’s actions are purely to find the killer of his late detective mate Anno. After certain criminals like The Monkeys, Stage Director, Doctor, etc, are found, the police arrest Takeira and try to fix him as Anno’s murderer. However, Shimura doesn’t buy it and presses the investigation more. It is at this point the viewers realise the real Invisible is not Kiroko but her brother Kirihito.

After a big revelation happens, Shimura understands that Kiriko is not guilty of all the deaths, but is only trying to stop her brother’s motives. We also get the backstory of how Kiriko’s father adopted her (since he killed her father). He has trained both his biological son Kirihito and Kiriko to become criminals since he was the Invisible before Kirihito murdered him. Kiriko’s brother becomes Invisible but someone named the Reaper guides him.

In order to find the Reaper who is inside the MPD, Kiriko navigates and finds data. Before she can tell the identity to Shimura, the latter comes with the present Chief Saruwatari (since Chief Inukai gets killed when he finds the reaper’s identity) to arrest Kirihito. During this scene, the reaper shoots Kirihito when he tries to save Kiriko. We then find that all along, Chief Saruwatari is the mastermind behind all the mess.

When Saruwatari kills a woman as per his request, he finds Anno meddling at the crime scene. Just when Shimura rushes to save Anno, Saruwatari slits Anno’s throat and witnesses Shimura’s heartbreaking emotions. After this incident, Saruwatari took pleasure in witnessing Shimura suffer from PTSD nightmares and aftershocks. Since he was jealous of Shimura’s skills, he decided to let him live so that he could keep making his life miserable.

It is revealed that Saruwatari made Kirihito as Invisible by advising him to kill his father so that he could use him as his puppet. Apparently, Shimura already knows that Saruwatari is the criminal, but he wanted to keep him alone. When the truth comes out, Saruwatari puts all the blame on Shimura, leaving the latter to elope and hide with Kiriko. During this phase, Shimura convinces two MPD cops and asks them to side with him.

They go according to Shimura’s plan, making Saruwatari believe that they believe Shimura is the traitor. They hold a conversation about Shimura’s whereabouts so that Saruwatari can go and catch him. Everything goes accordingly making Saruwatari believe that Shimura is now under his captive. He then arranges for the arrest of Kiriko, who is at the stadium ground.

In the last scene, Saruwatari tries to arrest Kiriko before Shimura walks in, flabbergasting Saruwatari. He then realises that the MPD is on Shimura’s side. Everything that happens on the ground is live-streamed to the MPD headquarters, and Saruwatari gets caught. To escape, he tries to shoot Kiriko, but Shimura shoots him in both his hands perfectly. This reveals to the audience that all along when the cops said Shimura can’t shoot correctly, it was all just a lie made up to cover the real skill of the detective, for his shots are deadly and precise.

The series ends with Kiriko saying that her mission is done, to which Shimura replies that there are still evil criminals to discover. This can be the beginning of another season, but until then, we know that the duo are not departing and that they’re joining hands to solve crimes.
