Tags: album jimin music

Face Album marks the solo debut of the K-pop group BTS member Park Jimin. It is described as a reflection of vulnerable and unexposed wounds that the singer will try to share through his music. The EP was released on 24th March 2023 with the title track Like crazy along with the music video. Before that, a pre-release track was released on 17th March titled Set Me Free Pt 2.

The album consists of 6 tracks, out of which the last one is an English version of the title track. BTS Jimin is especially known for his sultry and soft voice that instantly gets you in the mood. Especially paired with his impeccable dancing skills and it will make anyone his fan. Recently, he collaborated with BigBang’s Taeyang for his single Vibe which also charted high as the members of two big K-pop groups came together & there are obviously no questions about their beautiful voices.

Face Album Tracklist

Face Off

The first track on the album starts off with rather festive music but soon turns a bit dark as if channelling the inner feelings behind a mask. BTS’ leader RM and Jimin are credited as songwriters for this track along with Pdogg, Ghstloop and Evan. It has been described as finding resilience after feelings of doubt and disappointment.

If we look at the life of a K-pop idol or any celebrity for that matter, they all have a public persona that is completely different from their own personal self, something which BTS has talked about in their album Map of the Soul: Persona. I think Jimin here channelises the solace moments when he is just being himself without putting on any mask & he just wants to drink all night and not be sober for a while.

Interlude: Dive

This interlude continues the concept of the first track with sounds from his daily life, which includes having endless meetings about his work, and practice, some moments of panic & anxiety but then he goes on the stage & meets his fans who uplifts his spirits. But when he gets off the stage, it’s all silence as he goes back to his home and finally has a sigh of relief when he sits down to drink a glass of water. The interesting thing is that the music sounds like the chord progression of J-hope’s Blue Side.

Like Crazy

The main track of the album is a synth-pop genre with intense synth sound and drum sound, upon which Jimin’s poignant timbre draws a beautiful distinction. The title of the track is also the same as the singer’s favourite movie of the same name which was released in 2011. It follows the long-distance relationship between two people from different countries & how they struggle to keep their feelings alive.

We can hear the whispers of two lovers in the track, where the guy is afraid that they will eventually break up but the female voice asks him to trust & hold on. In the music video, Jimin is seen in a night club often feeling alone in a crowd of people, as if looking for someone who will recognise his real self. He tries to gel up with others but at the end of the day, he again finds himself alone.

Alone

With this track, he portrays the vulnerable feelings where he lies to himself that everything will be okay but he is slowly breaking down. The lyrics say that every day feels the same and how long will he have to wait till everything goes back to normal. In an interview it was revealed that the singer tried to express the fear and anxiety which everyone felt during the pandemic, hoping for everything to go back to how it was.

Set Me Free Pt 2

This pre-release showcases BTS members’ flawless and powerful dancing with a dramatic song. Clad in black, the singer wishes to be free from all the worries that were expressed in the last track. After having a vulnerable moment he comes back stronger and keeps on moving forward with all the strength he has, breaking away from all the darkness – as he changes into a white outfit in the end, signifying he has broken the infinite loop.

Like Crazy (English Version)

This is the all-English version of the main track and could help the singer chart better in Western countries or radio plays.

Summing Up

Through this album, Jimin definitely wants to show his mature and maybe a bit edgy side of himself & step out of his sweet boyish personality, which is usually shown through his group activities. Each song uniquely pulls you in with bittersweet feelings and expresses the tenderness with its R&B influences in the music.

Also, there’s a hidden track titled Letter which can be found in the physical album and available on SoundCloud. Another BTS member Jungkook is apparently credited for background vocals & the song resembles the song Promise but is more ballad-like.
