Faraway Ending Explained: Did Zeynep and Josip Fall in Love?

Netflix’s new German/English/Turkish/Croatian-language (that’s a mouthful) chick-flick talks about the concept of moving on and finding your roots, and the Faraway ending explained explores how it went. This film stars Naomi Krauss, Goran Bogdan, Adnan Maral, Bahar Balci, Artjom Gilz, and Davor Tomic, alongside other cast members. It is directed by Vanessa Jopp, while the screenplay is written by Jane Ainscough. Eva Katharina Bühler joins the crew as the cinematographer while Viola Jäger produces this film.

Faraway follows a woman going through a rough couple of months building up to her mother’s funeral which becomes the event that incites the escape to her mother’s secretly owned House in Croatia. She is free enough to think and recuperate her senses to realise what is important and what is trivial in the grand scheme of things.

Faraway Ending Explained

In the beginning, we see Zeynep struggling to keep her head right when she is speaking with her husband, her father and her daughter. She is overwhelmed by her mother’s death and no one in the family is providing each other with the appropriate support to get through something traumatic like this. After she finds out that Ilyas, her husband will not come to the funeral, she becomes increasingly angry and goes back home.

When she reaches, the lawyer gives her the deed of the secret house that her mother had bought in her motherland, Croatia. Seeing this moment as her escape, she takes the van, punches the Croatia address and makes her way to the estate. However, there are many challenges on her way there because she doesn’t know the people there or the language. Making do with just speaking English and some broken Croatian, she finally finds her way to the house.

The next morning, she wakes up next to a snoring man and is terribly confused about the same. However, he reassures her that Katharina, Zeynep’s mother had allowed him to live in the house until he could buy it back. They get into this push-and-pull relationship that is clearly unsustainable because Zeynep wants to sell the house or at least put it out for rent, but each and every one of her attempts to do the same ends up backfiring because Josip, the man living on her property is right there to ruin it.

He is so overbearing in her life that he even interrupts a make-out session in order to remind her that he will not be an avid supporter of her selling the house. Dragging her away from the man, he offers her something. It is her mother’s diary all translated to English. This is one of the first few moments of connection we see between the two of them. Conversations on the boat, helping her get over her husband’s infidelity and her mother’s death looming over all of this.

Eventually, the two characters get on the same page and sleep together. The next morning, though, her daughter comes to the house, finds her hanging out with someone and having breakfast naked. This sets her off into a rage causing an intense tiff between the mother and daughter. Although as she comes to understand her daughter’s fear, Zeynep is able to soothe her and give her some insight into her life in Croatia. However, just as mother-daughter get together, there are other people barging in on the property.

Josip’s brother was about to buy the property so he came to the house, while Ilyas and Zeynep’s father come to check up on her and Josip also makes an appearance. Now, the levels of testosterone are hitting the roof, because they are all fighting with each other over the house, the woman and most importantly some kind of honour. Zeynep takes one look at this and shuts them all up. However, she asks them to be here while she brings groceries so they can all cook and eat dinner.

The dinner ends extremely well, with Zeynep giving a speech for her mother. They all dance to the song that becomes a recurring motif throughout the film and Josip retreats into his shell, feeling like he has been intruding into this family space. But Zeynep makes it clear to llyas that she is not coming back home. When she gets back inside the house, she sees a singular balloon, like the one in the song and this pushes her to go to Josip.

Josip is walking dejectedly but sees Zeynep running to him and meets her halfway, they kiss and make up and this sets the scene that maybe there is something more to their story.
