-MH370 The Plane That Disappeared Review Contain Spoilers-

Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 was supposed to be a routine trip – A redeye from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with 239 passengers and among them were 12 crew on board. But shortly after takeoff on a calm 2014 night, MH370 vanished from radar screens for good. The shocking disappearance of a commercial airliner made headlines, sparked riots, plunged the passengers’ next of kin into a nightmare, and generated a global search for answers that never came.

The documentary explores seven countries, to reconstruct the night of the disappearance, giving viewers the chance to explore some of the most contentious theories about the plane’s disappearance. It’s a story full of conspiracies and rabbit holes, shadowy figures and official silence.

Often heard with the phrase, the greatest mystery in aviation history – it truly remains an unanswered question which left hundreds of families shattered by the loss of their loved one. The plane left at its intended time at 12:41 am but sometime after 1 am when it left the Malaysian air space and was supposed to connect with Vietnam’s airspace, it lost all communication in the middle of the South China sea.

When the plane didn’t reach its intended destination – Beijing by 6:30 am, all hell breaks loose with all the news outlets getting on the breaking news of a missing plane. Some of the passenger’s families even got to know when a journalist called up looking for the said person. It was a rare unfortunate incident but even more mind-boggling was that nobody knew what even happened.

I have been fairly informed about the incident through the news that was reported until now and hoped to find out something more about this case. But I shouldn’t have had my hopes up with a Netflix documentary that obviously is made just for sensational matters and churn the same lines over and over by making potential people antagonists.

Obviously, a case that has been unsolved for 9 years wouldn’t magically be solved by a crew of documentary makers but I still expected some new evidence that is not exactly public, to show or at least discussed. But all we got is some self-proclaimed people who think they are absolutely right blabber on the matter which has been already debunked.

It really amazes me that people who are so far away from the subject matter, claim to hold the baton of all the answers based on the internet research they did. There could be some truth in it but the way they present it as the ultimate truth that’s being ignored by everyone is just ridiculous. They often forget to step away and look at it objectively. Of course, if someone has spent a quality amount of time on something they would want to show something as a result but sometimes you just have to accept when there’s not.

In the name of experts, all we have is people who were briefly involved in the search operations, clearing up their images and showing that they did everything. The journalists featured are nothing more than conspiracy theorists on Reddit and some independent individuals who claimed to have found something, remain just a piece of information found but no action has been taken.

It would have been much better if they investigated the lady from tomnod community who claimed to have found the pictures of plane debris at the location where the plane lost all contact. Even if it was shot in the dark, it would have been a true investigative documentary to actually search up at those locations. Debris or not it would have been commendable at their effort to actually try to find an answer rather than just profiting off of it.

While the creators state that it’s an effort to keep the memory of those who were lost alive, apart from 2-3 I dont see any mention or simple rolling credits of all the people who were on the plane.

Summing Up: MH370 The Plane That Disappeared

In simple words, the documentary series talks about three theories of what could have happened and it involves all the arguments people have made over the years. However, none of the theories mentioned seems plausible enough to even believe for a second. From antagonising the Pilot to making it a hijack attempt or simply warfare among countries, it is just full of assumptions.

Although there are already enough theories, in my opinion, it’s probably a technical issue in the plane which led to its sudden crash in the water body or the plane blew off suddenly due to explosive cargo. I find it hard to believe that there’s some spy action thriller going on but the lack of adequate efforts from the authorities, who lost their chance to find the answers early on & just tried to push it under the rug when they couldn’t come up with a conclusion.

If anything, the documentary will certainly help in creating more discourse about the case. But honestly, I am scared of all the Tik Tok & reels that would come out with their own proven by ‘the unknown expert’ videos, which will find some hidden ways to creep into my feed.
