10 Songs That Got Into Controversies: WAP, Varaha Roopam, Montero and More

Time and again, artists have created songs that got into controversies regardless of the unproblematic content. Either they offend a particular community or get tangled into legal troubles. Copyright claims have enabled creators to ensure their original work is protected, whereas some try to take advantage of the system.

Without further ado, let us check out the songs that became the talk of the town!

Songs That Got Into Controversies

Wrecking Ball- Miley Cyrus

Following the VMA performance debacle, Miley Cyrus took the world by storm with Wrecking Ball. The Hannah Montana star transitioned from the ‘innocent’ image to her fierce self, which did not sit right with most people. Meanwhile, the other half welcomed and embraced her change. Swinging on the giant orb and breaking down walls, the music video became an instant sensation worldwide. It broke the Youtube record by garnering the most views in 24 hours back in 2013.

Varaha Roopam- Kantara

The song became an instant hit among the masses following its release; however, a Kerala-based band, Thaikkudam Bridge, claimed that the creators of Kantara plagiarised their song, Navarasam, through social media. Soon after, they approached Kozhikode District Court and filed an injunction order from playing the song on any music streaming platform. But the petition filed by the band has been dismissed by the court now due to lack of enough evidence to hold the ban order. The song is currently back on streaming platforms.

Famous- Kanye West

Following the release of the music video, controversies started to rise from every side. He lay in bed with the wax figures of prominent big names like Donald Trump, George W. Bush, Chris Brown, Amber Rose, Taylor Swift, and his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. However, the most controversial aspect was the lyrics, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex, I made that b*tch famous”, which apparently Swift did not consent to.

MONTERO- Lil Nas X

From recreating Garden of Eden to giving the devil a lap dance, Lil Nas X brewed a video for utter chaos. The intention behind the video was not to hurt any religious sentiments and more about accepting his sexuality and embracing his true self. However, he touched a nerve with the older generation, especially the religious people who called him the reincarnation of evil, and politicians bombarded him with ruthless questions to make a statement.

WAP- Cardi B ft. Meghan Thee Stallion

There are hundreds of videos and songs from male artists with the same content, but the masses only showed dissent when women did it. It was disgraceful for some and empowering for most; either way, two women singing about sex should not be a problem for anybody. The addictive chorus and Meghan’s powerful verse went viral on every social media platform.

Ghoomar- Padmaavat

The movie faced many controversies before its release as the Rajput Community objected to various elements. Deepika Padukone’s midriff could be seen in the original video, and the community said that Rajput queens did not expose their skin. Following the outrage from Karni Sena, the creators made significant changes to the video by covering the exposed midriff using computer-generated fabric.

Judas- Lady Gaga

Before Lil Nas X, there was Lady Gaga, who was unafraid to use religious imagery in her music videos. The Christian community insisted on the narrative that the artist was mocking their religion, which led to various discussions. Meanwhile, some people considered it a masterpiece and a way for the singer to express herself freely. Nevertheless, the song became an instant hit and recently went viral on Tiktok.

Blurred Lines- Robin Thicke ft. T.I., Pharrell Williams

Robin Thicke received a lot of backlash for the song’s provocative lyrics, “I know you want it”, which according to some people, glorified sexual harassment. Additionally, the music video contained certain imagery, which was uncomfortable to watch. The singer also got sued for having similarities with Marvin Gaye’s song Got To Give It Up.

Stan- Eminem ft. Dido

Embroiling in controversy for Eminem in the early 2000s was a regular instance. The video followed a man “Stan” who was a devout fan of the rapper. His obsession towards the artist leads him to commit gruesome crimes. Furthermore, the music video contained heavy, violent imagery and was censored due to it. Later on, the song inspired the creation of a new name, “Stans”, to describe the obsessive fans.

Like a Prayer- Madonna

Madonna angered everyone back in 1989 by including explicit religious imagery. From burning crosses to including Black Jesus caused a wildfire among the masses. The Vatican also involved itself in condemning the singer, and Pepsi also joined in to do the same. However, the director of the video, Mary Lambert, stood by her artistic choices and questioned the people who were outraged by the clips.
