How I Met Your Father Season 2 Episode 6 Recap and Review: Stooping Point of the Good Sitcom

How I Met Your Father Season 2 Episode 6 offers a quirky romance between Sophie and Oscar. Now that Jesse is single, we can assume he might be the father, but the men in Sophie’s life constantly emerge like a storm. This episode is dull since it’s just a regular one that shows the characters’ life and Oscar’s weird side. The sitcom creator is Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, and it serves as a standalone sequel to everyone’s favourite show from the early 2000s- How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM).

We see the return of Hilary Duff as Sophie, Chris Lowell as Jesse, Francia Raisa as Valentina, Suraj Sharma as Sid, Tom Ainsley as Charlie, Tien Tran as Ellen and Kim Cattrall as the future Sophie. We will also see Ashley Reyes as Hannah, Leighton Meester as Meredith, Josh Peck as Drew, Meaghan Rath as Parker, Michael McDonald as Warren, Jessica St Clair as Megan, Judy as Judy, Morgan Smith as Alice and Stony Blyden as Jasper. In addition to the old cast, we have Mark Consuelos, Constance Marie, Michael Cimino and John Corbett joining the cast for the new season.

The sixth episode of the show’s second season is called Universal Therapy. It is directed by Pamela Fryman and written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger. The runtime for the episode is 21 minutes.

The episode starts with Jesse, Charlie, Ellen and Valentina drinking happily. Just then, Sophie enters after her date with Oscar. She expresses to her friends about the huge diamond necklace which Oscar flashed to her. As Sophie finds the necklace pretty cranky, Ellen suggests that Sophie discusses her thoughts on it with a therapist. Sophie requests Ellen to ask her therapist on behalf of her, and the latter agrees.

Meanwhile, Sid returns from California only to find Charlie investing in spoiled wine cases that a beautiful sales representative sold. Sid becomes annoyed at Charlie for wasting money. On the other hand, Valentina has a hard time in her job since her boss is grumpy. Sadly, Jesse also joins the same work as he was sent there by an agency. Despite knowing about Valentina’s boss, he decides to work there because he can’t return to teaching since he has a bad history with Drew.

Ellen talks to the therapist about the necklace, not on behalf of Sophie, but rather portraying that she’s asking it for herself. The therapist shares her opinion, and Ellen tells about it to Sophie. In the next scene, Sid and Charlie are clueless about the wine cases. Sophie comes up with an idea and asks them to brand and sell the wine with some celebrity’s name and sell it. So Charlie and Sid term their wine “Judy Juice”, representing Judge Judy.

Sophie, as advised, decides to ask Oscar about the necklace, to which he replies that it is made out of his dead mother’s ashes. This creeps out Sophie even more. Sophie once again requests Ellen to ask about it. Sophie later spends the night with Oscar and experiences an amazing night.

When the morning comes, Oscar asks Sophie her honest opinion on the necklace, to which she replies that there is no necessity to wear the necklace all the time—just what the therapist suggested. However, when Oscar isn’t wearing the necklace, the sex doesn’t feel great between them, which soon makes Sophie worry.

Surprisingly, Sid and Charlie are earning well with Judy Juice. Conversely, Jesse tries his best, but Valentina starts bossing him around. Jesse explains it to her, and both ponder a way out of the heaviness. Sophie, Valentina and Jesse seek Ellen, but she states that this would be the last time she will talk to the therapist about their issues.

As Judy Juice sells well, the real celebrity visits the place and starts accusing the duo. She later takes the remaining wine cases and sells them herself, leaving the duo out of the profit. Sad! Moving on, thankfully, Ellen gives all three, their required solutions, but unfortunately, she gets dropped out of the patient zone because the therapist felt that she has “Uninsured Friend Syndrome.”

Sophie, Jesse and Valentina feel guilty, so they somehow convince Ellen’s therapist to take her back as her patient. As per the therapist’s advice, Jesse joins Drew and starts to teach again. Valentina confronts her boss and quits the job. However, her bravery fascinates the boss, who gives her a promotion.

Sophie, who is suggested to talk honestly to Oscar about her sex queries, ends up saying that when he wears the necklace, their sex life is good. This creeps Oscar, and he dumps her right on the spot. When Sophie tells about the event to her friends, they all side with Oscar but Sophie sternly believes that the necklace has power.

How I Met Your Father Season 2 Episode 6: Final Thoughts

The episode is a big no-no. So far, all the episodes were building the story well, but this one felt like an add-on to extend the total episode count. Oscar and Sophie’s dating life didn’t last long, and the reason behind it felt like a forced joke. Truth be told, Oscar could have been cut out of Sophie’s life in the first place. Showing their weird dating time was a waste of time.

Jesse and Sophie’s storyline isn’t explored. Sid and his girlfriend’s romance also isn’t getting a proper conclusion. Valentina and Charlie are completely out of the picture, I guess. Where is Ian again? This episode seems completely lost and has no impact on the storyline. It is blunt.
