Oddballs Season 2 Review: Weird and Loud Yet Clever and Upright!

Oddballs season 2, created by James Rallison, leaves viewers with a chuckle and a good message. Starting his career in 2012 with just comic strips, James Rallison has come so far after his YouTube Series became a hit, which ultimately turned into a supreme series on Netflix. Following the life of a white marshmallow type of boy, James, the story shows how he and his friends turn everyday inconveniences into a whole lot of mess, giving out a moral to learn.

The official Netflix description of the series reads,

Bubble-shaped boy James questions anything and everything that annoys him. The result? An awesome life of odd adventure with his two best friends.

The series’ voice actors are James Rallison as James, Julian Gant as Max, Kimberly Brooks as Echo, Harland Williams as Patrick, Carl Faruolo as Stuart, Gary Anthony Williams as Mr. McFly, Courtenay Taylor as Dr. Squats and several others.

Oddballs season 1 introduced several characters, and season 2 includes some old and new characters. James and Max, as usual, are having fun with their unexpected journey in this series which eventually gets them into more trouble. They laugh it off at the end of the day, though. James has more questions this season, and Max is simply beside him, supporting at all stages.

James and Max spend quality time with Echo, but she is the only sane one among the trio. Despite Echo telling James what to do, he messes up, which makes Echo angry but in a cute way. You can’t deny that. The other characters are also insanely good, as they help the show’s context build nicely.

Oddballs Season 2 is Packed With Life Lessons

The reason why Oddballs has been one of my favourite kids’ shows is because it’s weird and beautiful in a unique way. Though humour is the key here, each episode’s message is profound. In the first episode, James states that people like a certain musical because of its hype. Echo denies this, but James bets that he can prove it. After hours of effort, he delivers a fantastic musical with stunning lyrics; however people call it a “comedy” and give his performance an ovation.

The episode conveys that social media influencers can create a fake hype around something, which the rest of the people simply follow. While the musical and James’ anger towards the end seem comical, the message regarding good content going to the waste is spot on. Similarly, in the following episodes, we can experience concepts like true friendship, people using Max for a benefit, the unfair rule in the school which allows the teachers to exploit students, etc.

While these themes seem harsh and too realistic to be added in a kids’ show, that’s where the creators add their flavour. The characters are naive, and the plot behind each theme is odd and absurd. Adults who watch it can easily pick up on the message the creators are trying to convey, but it’s unsure whether the kids will. Well, that’s exactly why parents need to watch it along with kids and educate them. As simple as that.

Final Thoughts

Oddballs season 2 did its job amazingly. The reason why the show has the title is to deliberately show that the series is going to be weird and odd in a good way. So if you’re expecting for a legit kids’ show where dolls will be speaking and having a cup of tea, then this isn’t your go to. Truth be told, nothing will be your go-to.

I loved this season because even if I’m an adult, the life lessons and harsh realities that are depicted funnily hit one hard. I wonder why some people find the series annoying—that’s exactly the purpose of the series!

Anyhow, Oddballs season 2 is streaming now on Netflix. Catch it up, and let us know your thoughts in the comment section.
