Outer Banks Season 1 Recap

The first episode opens with a group of teenagers consisting of John B, JJ, Kiara, and Pope, living in the Outer Banks who call themselves the Pogues. After John B’s father went missing, his uncle became his legal guardian, but due to his repeated absence, the authorities decided to put him under Foster Care. On the inspection day, an unwarranted hurricane commenced, which delayed the meeting.

The group took the opportunity to fish for crabs, and they noticed a Boat below the river that sank due to the hurricane. Later they found out that the boat belonged to one of the island’s residents, Scooter, but they did not inform the authorities. With his friends’ help, John B searched the boat and found a bag hidden inside the compartment. Some heavily armed men tried to shoot them, but they escaped the death trap. Inside the bag, he found a compass that belonged to his missing father.

John and JJ headed out to interrogate Scooter’s wife about the compass, and they saw the same two men who chased them earlier in her house. They asked Lana who those men were and why the compass was found in Scooter’s boat, but she revealed nothing and asked them to leave immediately. John continues his search and finds the hidden message his father left that was carved below the compass, which said ‘Redfield’.

John B and his friends go to the Redfield lighthouse, his father’s favourite place, to search for clues. The guard became hostile upon looking at the compass and called the cops. John B and Kiara were arrested and taken to the station; fortunately, Kiara’s father freed them on bail. However, the chase continued as the men found John B again, but the Sheriff arrived at the right time and saved him. He gave the compass to the officer and left the scene. Later at night, the group went to the abandoned Redfield church to search for clues again and found an envelope. Inside the envelope, it consisted of a map leading to the treasure.

Along with the map, a tape recorder was also present inside the envelope. It was a recording of John’s father who revealed that he was on a treasure hunt and he successfully found where the gold was located. The group continued their hunt, and a clue directed them towards a spot beneath the ocean. However, The Kooks physically assault Pope and as an act of revenge Pope and JJ drowns Topper’s expensive speedboat. The next day they head out to the spot in search of the treasure, and they finally come across the Royal Merchant boat that belonged to the owner of the treasure.

However, they could not find the gold after looking for it several times with a metal detector and drone. Disappointed, John B returned home and found the Social Services officer inside his house to hand him in Foster Care. He escaped from the officers and met Sarah, who helped him. They both take a trip to the Archives Museum following another clue that John B encounters at Sarah’s house.

Meanwhile, JJ and Pope get into another fight with The Kooks after Topper finds out that they are the ones who drowned his boat. The officers identified them, and Topper’s mother decided to press charges against the teens. But JJ takes the blame for the incident when the officers arrive to arrest Pope. John and Sarah find a major clue, leading to a letter that indicates the location of the 400 million worth of gold. They also grow closer to each other, which eventually turns into a romantic relationship.

John B translated the letter’s content through his teacher, which led to another major clue. With the help of JJ, he broke into the Midsummer Annual party, where he met Sarah and asked her to bring the blueprint map of Tannyhill, the location of the gold. Later at night, they meet at the tower, and Topper also follows her, which leads to a confrontation with John B. Due to an argument, Topper pushes John B from the tower. He survives the fall without major injuries, and Sarah’s father, Ward Cameron, invites him to stay at their house. John also decided to include Sarah in the hunt, but Kiara was against the decision, which led to a fight.

Later, the rest of the group tricked Sarah and Kiara into spending time together alone to sort out their broken relationship. They talked out their differences and decided to become friends again. The same night, the group and Sarah set out to look for the gold hidden in a house owned by an aged woman. After much effort, John B finally finds the gold hidden inside the well of the backyard.

Ward overhears Sarah and John B discussing about the gold, and he immediately invites John on a fishing expedition, and they head out early morning next day. Ward asked John about the treasure hunt and offered his help. John refused to admit that he found the gold, leading to Ward unintentionally mentioning ‘Redfield’. John realized that Ward knew about the treasure and his father’s disappearance.

Ward tried to kill John B on the boat, but he escaped with a speedboat. Ward stabbed himself with an arrow and informed the police that John had attacked him. John reached Lana’s house and urged her to tell the truth about his father. She revealed that his father was killed and left in the ocean by Ward, and Cooper found his father’s compass on an abandoned island.

Furious, John reached Ward’s house and told Sarah the truth, but she refused to believe that her father was a murderer. Ward stole the gold and planned to stash it in his house in the Bahamas with Sarah, but John reached on time to rescue her. Suddenly the Sherrif also arrived and arrested Ward, but she was shot from behind by Rafe (Ward’s son). John B ran away from the crime scene, and Ward pinned the murder on him.

The police declared John a wanted criminal and put a bounty on him worth $50,000. John went to the police station to reveal the truth about the Sheriff’s death, but he escaped after discovering he was a suspect. Meanwhile, JJ steals the boat from his father to help John escape the island. The group took the boat to John and said their goodbyes. As he took the boat offshore, he met Sarah at the docks, and she joined him on the expedition. However, the police spot them, and several ships attempt to apprehend the teens. They sail directly into the storm, and the police had no choice but to halt the chase.

Ward urged John to return his daughter to safety through the radio, but John threatened him that he would return and make him pay for his father’s death. The boat capsized due to the strong winds, and the police lost the radio signal. Both the teens were declared dead. The next morning they were found swimming near the capsized boat, and they called for help from the nearby sailing ship.
