This Family is coming back soon for another adventure, so here is The Upshaws season 1 recap. This is a Netflix original show starring the wonderful Wanda Sykes, along with other cast members like Mike Epps, Kim Fields, Diamond Lyons, Khali Spraggins, Page Kennedy, Jermelle Simon, Gabrielle Dennis, Mike Estime and Journey Christine. It is created by Wanda Sykes and Regina Y Hicks and contains 10 episodes, each running for about 25-29 minutes.

This show focuses on a blended family that has been broken apart too many times to fix, mostly by the father Bennie. When things start getting rougher and rougher with the family, Regina is forced to make a decision about the family forever changing the trajectory of their lives.

A working-class Black family in Indiana strives for a better life and a happy home while juggling everyday struggles in this comedy series.

The Upshaws Season 1 Recap

We’re given an introduction to this family when we first see Bennie speaking to his wife, Regina, about their daughter Aaliyah’s birthday party. Bennie was supposed to book The Lotus Room as a party hall for her, but Bennie didn’t do that because he likely forgot about it in the first place because he was planning a trip with his friends to Las Vegas.

His friends Duck, Davis and Tony are all piling in to find a venue for Aaliyah’s party. Eventually, they use the VFW hall to host her party, which was filled with stripper poles and women’s underwear. However, the hammer drops when he finds out that Kelvin’s party is also at the same time. This eventual back and forth leads to Aaliyah’s party being hijacked and the family getting together for the celebration.

As the season progresses, we start to get insights about the characters on the show, including Bernard, the first son, Aaliyah and Maya, the youngest daughter. While Kelvin is also Bennie’s son, that happened when Tasha and Bennie conceived him at a time when Regina and him were on a break. Bernard doesn’t really like Bennie because he was abandoned by his father. Bennie’s way of reconciling with his son is by ordering things so that he can see his son once every few days.

The episodes progress further, and we see that Kelvin before had a detached relationship with his father, causing some problems in his development as a normal child. Tasha is a cool parent in that she is okay with Kelvin drinking underage, playing dice and gambling to some extent. In an attempt to become closer to his son, they decide to meet every week at the house.

When Bennie realises that even with all this effort, Kelvin seems to be left behind in school, he decides to give Tasha a car, which does not end well for the family members. One of the biggest opposers to this is his sister-in-law, Lucretia, who truly believes that Bennie is good for nothing and Regina can do much better than him. Lucretia decides to keep it all on the down low if he doesn’t tell Regina about the fact that she is sleeping with a married man.

This doesn’t end well with Regina, who finds out about both of these things anyway. What makes it worse is that Tasha crashed into a car, causing problems with Bennie and the guy who had his car totalled. In the end, Bennie cut a deal, but that money came from Regina’s fund to take the GMAT. She is furious that he could do something like this so normally, so she kicks him out of the house.

At this point Bennie is ready to try anything, so much so, that even Lucretia seems to get behind this new version of this man. Bernard comes out to his father, who is trying to be cool with it, the relationship with his kids and wife comes to a truce, and things are finally okay. Bennie convinces to be welcomed back into the house after an incident with Maya leaves them rattled.

His relationship with the kids becomes so strong and cordial that Regina feels threatened. However, she is really happy by the end because she has her family together now and a partner who will help her through difficult times in her life. Just when the season is about to end on a wholesome note, there is a little girl at the door looking for Bennie Upshaw.

She breaks the news that she is actually his daughter, and the season ends with Lucretia’s incredulous voice asking if this is actually a joke. And on this cliffhanger, the season ends, leaving audiences yearning for some closure about this truth bomb. In the next season, we’ll be able to find out whether it is actually Bennie’s daughter, if Regina will kick him out again, and who is the mother of this daughter that showed up unannounced.
