MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 21 Review: Nostalgia Turns Sweet or Bitter For Some

MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 21 is titled ‘Bachpan Ki Yaadein’ and the synopsis reads, “After spending a week in Goa, home cooks are back in the Masterchef kitchen and are given a task to make a dessert that will take them back to their childhood. How will the home cooks fare in this challenge?”

The judges of the show include Vikas Khanna and Ranveer Brar, who are joined by Garima Arora, the first-ever female chef to be a judge on the show. The cooking competition show is a nationwide quest to find the best ‘home cook’ and draws out some of the most brilliant chefs from across India. The judges sample recipes from various cuisines that the contestants prepare in their search for India’s ‘MasterChef’. The show is produced by Endemol Shine India and it is directed by Neeraj Shetty.

After some continuous team challenges and pressuring tests, the home cooks are welcomed back to the MasterChef kitchen with some laugh, reunion and nostalgia. Currently, there are 11 contestants but the number of kitchen counters was 12 which confused everyone but was soon revealed to be the comeback of contestant Nazia, who had to leave in between due to her child’s bad health.

Making the number 12 again, the home cooks are presented with a surprise box again, but this time, instead of some surprising element – they find their own childhood pictures. The judges ask everyone about their pictures and reveal that this is the challenge for today. They have to create a dessert that should reflect their childhood memories on a plate.

They will be given 90 minutes and especially today the pantry will remain open at all times. After the challenge, the contestant who will make the dish of the day will be safe for the whole week.

For the most part, the contestants were reminiscing about their childhood and their families whom they miss a lot. From their core memories, they tried to recreate the same dishes with their own innovations. While in the last challenges, the contestants were making quite some blunders, in today’s episode, even though there were any mistakes – they were able to rectify them on the spot.

Aruna’s dish was shown first, in which she had created a seviyan kheer popsicle with jujube (bair) jelly and fennel chipda with elai vadam papad. She presented it in a glass with popsicles on ice and the papad at the rim. She was commended by judges for the presentation as well as for excellent taste.

The second was Santa who made a coconut cake with white chocolate dome and ginger crumble. However, her cake had too much flavouring that made it off balance. Her brother also visited her in the kitchen which made for a wholesome moment. Then Priyanka coconut nadu truffle with macarons filled with kamarak (Carambola) and roasted mango sauce.

Gurkirat presented a deconstructed strawberry cheesecake which got the famous line ‘swaad aa gya’ by Chef Ranveer and Chef Vikas also complemented his technique of making some elements with finesse. Nayanjyoti made an orange mousse dome with cake but he wasn’t able to present it in the way he wanted as his first batch of orange mousse got curdled. But it was still complimented for excellent taste, that could have been the dish of the day.

Deepa made khoya with bread rolls and spiced milk and to make things better, her daughter also came to visit her and took the first bit of her dish. Priya made a rose and coconut panna cotta but it was not set well and the judges didn’t appreciate it. Avinash made chuda ghasa which is like a sweetened poha, and Sachin made a chocolate ice cream tree with orange amaretto sauce which judges found too childish.

Suvarna made a rainbow cake with shrikhand but the vinegar and baking powder overtook the cake and Nazia made jalebi with chana daal halwa, where the jalebi was not made perfectly and lastly Kamaldeep made masala lassi cheesecake which was questioned by judges for using chilli flake over the cake and not persuading enough with flavours.

Final Thoughts: MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 21

After the challenge, the judges were quite impressed with some and disappointed by some too. Therefore they decided to give two black aprons to the contestants who didn’t stand up to their standards. Suvarna and Avinash were the unlucky two who will straight away go to eliminations unless they make the dish of the day and get safe.

There were two favourites as well, Gurkirat and Aruna’s dishes were selected as the best by the judges and out of the two, Gurkirat was selected to be the one to get safe. It’s nice to see other contestants stepping up and winning challenges other than the expected ones.

However, the Sony TV/SonyLIV team definitely has no schedule whatsoever – they have already posted a preview of the next two-three episodes already where Suvarna is wearing a white apron and only Avinash is seen in black. That means she will be acing the next challenge and we have no anticipation/mystery left to see the next episodes. Also, I don’t see Nazia going far in the competition considering the current contestants have already gone through quite a bit of training and she might not catch up to them.

MasterChef India Season 7 is currently streaming on SonyLIV and a new episode is released from Monday to Friday at 9 PM.
