While books are definitely the light at the end of every workday’s tunnel, movies or TV shows based on those books are even better. And if the adaptation is fantastic? It’s a glorious double whammy. We decided to compile 10 TV series based on popular books to indicate how incredibly the IP landscape has evolved.

Since many showrunners now decide to adapt books into series instead of movies, the content and pacing have become much more interesting than before. And with many upcoming projects in the future, here are some shows to binge before they come out.

Game of Thrones

This show has become such a cultural force that people were just as excited to see the spin-off House of the Dragon. Based on the books written by George RR Martin by the same name, the show focuses on the concept of absolute power. Concentrated on the Iron Throne, the show delves into the politics, drama and struggles of war. Game of Thrones is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.

The Handmaid’s Tale

If any show has the capacity to induce stark fear in women, it is this show. Written by Margeret Atwood, titled the same, this show is based on a dystopic world where women’s rights have been taken away, and some have been moved into an elite group designated only for reproduction. This show tells the story of one of those handmaids and her escape from this oppressive system. It is an extremely relevant text encapsulating a situation where extremist opinion triumphs. The Handmaid’s Tale is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Shadow and Bone

The fantasy genre has expanded into something great with Shadow and Bone, a book by Leigh Bardugo of the same name, which tells the story of a Sun Summoner destined to save the nation of Ravka and bring peace across the continent. However, her abilities are muted until General Kirigan or The Darkling unleashes her powers, setting into motion an interesting series of events leading to chaos and strife. Shadow and Bone is available to stream on Netflix.

The Sandman

Based on the comic books by Neil Gaiman, this show focuses on one of the Endless, Dream. He is an anthropomorphized version of the basic human condition of dreaming. Surrounded by siblings like Death, Desire, Despair and Destiny, this show explores Dream’s capture, his freedom and the way he navigates through the human world. The Sandman is available to stream on Netflix.

The Witcher

This show has one of the richest lores spanning a series of books and then video games that fully encapsulate the experience. Written by Andrzej Sapkowski, the show explores the story of Geralt of Rivia, who has a responsibility that he, too is unaware of until it is too late. While the show didn’t get traction initially, the pandemic changed everything making it one of the most popular shows. The Witcher is available to stream on Netflix.

Good Omens

When biblical concepts like Hell and Heaven exist, it is best to assume that Demons and Angels are walking among us. Which is what Crowley and Aziraphael are expected to do, as written by Neil Gaiman. However, after living on Earth for so long, they aren’t keen on going back to their designated places. When the end of the world edges nearer, the two decide on derailing it as much as possible. Good Omens is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Bridgerton

Based on the book series by Julia Quinn, the show follows a family, the Bridgertons to tell each sibling’s story as they look for the perfect match in the ton. Set in the early 1800s Regency period, the show has become a cultural phenomenon, best known to defy gender expectations and encourage female sexuality throughout the show. Bridgerton is available to stream on Netflix.

Normal People

Connell and Marianne have always been in each other’s lives, there hasn’t been a moment when they weren’t. Based on the book by Sally Rooney, this show is no plot, just vibes. The show explores character dynamics, sexuality, self-esteem and the prospect of familiarity. Rooney’s characters are always placed in a way that conveys familiarity towards audiences. Conversations with Friends

Based on the book by the same name, Rooney once again shines with this adaptation exploring human relationships and fidelity. Delving into relationship dynamics, trust and loyalty, the show explores the four characters from different perspectives, telling their stories from different angles. Conversations with Friends is available to stream on the Amazon Prime Video Channel, Lionsgate Play.

Big Little Lies

When a new mom moves into town, things start to get tense. Based on a book by Liane Moriarty, the show follows a group of friends who become privy to a murder that has no accused and no victim. After a set of events open up secrets, there is chaos, betrayal and accusations that have the ability to fracture relationships. Big Little Lies is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
