Movies Releasing in January 2023: Pathaan, JUNG_E, Teen Wolf The Movie and More

Here comes the new year, and with that we already have an up to date list ready for the movies releasing in January 2023 – theatrically as well as on various OTT platforms. The first month of the year is looking all chirpy and what not with several film titles ready to make their mark on the audience. Some major Hindi theatrical releases are all set to earn the blockbuster ticket, while other English, Korean, Polish, Mexican and more names are ready to trend high on Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+ and more.

Here’s a list of films, TV specials or stand-ups slated for release this January. Let’s take a look at what all is in store for us in the entertainment world!

January 2

How I Became a Gangster

Carrying the original title, Jak zostalem gangsterem. Historia prawdziwa, is a Polish crime drama film directed by Maciej Kawulski and written by Krzysztof Gureczny. With invigorating violent action-packed scenes, the movie is set to make its OTT premiere on Netflix and stars Marcin Kowalczyk, Tomasz Wlosok, Natalia Szroeder, Natalia Siwiec and more.

Phone Bhoot

Having originally released in Indian theatres on November 4, 2022, the Katrina Kaif, Ishaan Khatter, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Jackie Shroff and more Hindi-starrer horror comedy flick is all set for its OTT premiere. Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, the film centres around the lives of two unemployed horror movie fanatics, who on their way to find to find their vocations end up starting up a ghost-capturing service in joint partnership with a phantom named Ragini.

January 4

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

Merely releasing in select theatres of limited territories, the upcoming English movie starring Mark Manson has been directed by Nathan Price. Based on “global best-selling self-help phenomenon” authored by Manson, the documentary film is going to nitpick upon the societal pressures and expectation linked to one’s pursuit of happiness. The official synopsis of the movie proclaims it to be “a cinematic documentary designed to help us become less awful people”.

Mumbai Mafia: Police vs the Underworld

This true crime documentary on Netflix has been directed by Francis Longhurst and Raghav Darr and puts the 1990s Mumbai back into the spotlight with a special focus on the tussle between organised crime and “encounter cops” that consumed the then Indian City of Dreams.

Babe Bhangda Paunde Ne

Ready for its OTT premiere on ZEE5, the Punjabi film leads with Jaggi and his friends’s undying desire to get rich. To accomplish their goal, they set out on comical escapades that have them selling underwear and fostering an old father as a means to gain insurance incentives. Directed by Amarjit Singh Saron, the Indian movie welcomes Diljit Dosanjh as Jaggi, Sohail Ahmed as Iqbal, Sargun Mehta as Preet, Sangtar Singh as Bhullar and more.

The Pale Blue Eye

The chilling gothic period mystery dropping on Netflix stars Christian Bale, Harry selling, Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, and more and has been adapted from the titular 2003 novel by Louis Bayard. The movie had originally been released on December 23, 2022, in select cinemas and although it introduces the prominent personality whom we now know as the illustrious author Edgar Allan Poe, it’s still a fictional plot about the veteran detective Augustus Landor following the trail of several murders, while being accompanied by Poe.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre

Starring Jason Statham, Hugh Grant, Aubrey Plaza and more, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre directed by Guy Ritchie is all to release in Indian theatres on this date. The spy action comedy requires super spy Orson Fortune to track the sale of a new lethal weapon technology in the hands of billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds, and he can accomplish the task only if he partners up with some of the best operatives in the world, even if unwillingly.

Uunchai

Three best friends embark on the journey of a lifetime by taking the plunge to make it to the Mount Everest despite the numerous adversities in their path. This marks the movie’s OTT premiere on ZEE5.

The Hatchet Weilding Hitchhiker

The renowned story of the hitchhiking nomad ‘Kai’ is a rollercoaster ride indeed. Watch his initial rise to stardom, followed by his fall to imprisonment in this shocking Netflix documentary.

Andrew Santino: Cheeseburger

Santino’s unfiltered Netflix comedy special leaves no stone unturned as he takes turns to jump from topics like global warming, politics, sex and a lot more.

Noise

With the Mexican title Ruido, Noise is set to release on Netflix with a story wherein a mother reaches out to a support network in order to find her missing daughter. The group unites her with many such women who’ve witnessed life-shattering realities much like herself.

Thunivu

The 2023 action heist theatrical release is an Indian Tamil-language film starring Ajith Kumar, Manju Warrier, which has been directed by H. Vinoth, and produced by Boney Kapoor. A series of mysterious heists are planned out by a mastermind and his team. Is there an ulterior motive to this orderly pattern of robberies?

Directed by Victor Mukherjee, the Hindi action movie stars Riddhi Dogra, Anshuman Jha, Paresh Pahuja and more. Set to release in theatres, its plot revolves around vigilante Arjun Bakshi who uncovers an illegal animal trade cell at Kolkata port. His further investigation leads him to the rare species of Indian Striped Hyena i.e. Lakadbaggha.

Right in the heart of a post-apocalyptic future, a scientist plunges into a phenomenal research that will end the civil war. The arising predicament on the path is that it requires her to clone a soldier’s brain, also her mother. The South Korean sci-fi film stands as the last movie of Kang Soo-yeon before her demise. She’s accompanied by Ryu Kyung-soo and Kim Hyun-joo as her cast mates, while Yeon Sang-ho brings the project alive with his filmmaking eye.

Mission Majnu

Netflix India is once again taking us on a ride of the past in this action thriller starring Sidharth Malhotra, Rashmika Bandanna, Parmeet Sethi and more, directed by Shantanu Bagchi. Charging ahead as an undercover Indian spy in the 1970s, Majnu is out to expose the veiled nuclear weapons program in Pakistan.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Slated for its Indian theatrical release on January 20, 2023, the animated comedy, leading with the voice of Antonio Banderas as the titular character, features Puss on yet another mission to restore his nine lives by setting out on an epic adventure on the lookout for the mythical Last Wish.

Netflix‘s Narvik is a Norwegian military movie based on real life set against the background of the World War II as a soldier returns back only to find a devastating reality waiting at home for him.

Pathaan

Celebrating Shah Rukh Khan’s big-scale return to Bollywood, the Yash Raj action blockbuster will be releasing in Indian theatres in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Directed by Siddharth Anand, the highly anticipated Hindi film also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.

The Price of Family

Witness Christian De Sica, Angela Finocchiaro, Dharma Mangia Woods and Claudio Colica lure their adult children back into meeting them at any cost in the Italian comedy, Natale A Tutti i.e. The Price of Family on Netflix.

Teen Wolf The Movie

Jumping forth into the future, Teen Wolf: The Movie is bringing back some of the best characters of the long-running teen supernatural series, picking up the traces of what’s left of Beacon Hills after the show’s finale in 2017. Receiving the comeback of our favourite pack members – Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed, Holland Roden, Shelley Hennig, JR Bourne, Colton Haynes, Melissa Ponzio, Ian Bohen, Dylan Sprayberry, Seth Gillam, Vince Mattis and Khylin Rhambo – the wolves gather to face off against their deadliest foe yet, exclusively on Paramount+.

Tehran

John Abraham and Manushi Chhillar are essaying the lead roles in the upcoming Hindi movie directed by Arun Gopalan. Expected to release on India’s Republic Day, the action thriller is based on true events.

Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh

Filmmaker Raj Kumar Santoshi makes way for battle of the wits in his depiction of the warring ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse, all set to find its platform on the date of India’s Republic Day in theatres. Notable actors Deepak Antani, Chinmay Mandlekar, Arif Zakariya, and Pawan Chopra, and debutants Tanisha Santoshi & Anuj Saini are joining in to fill the lead roles.

Shotgun Wedding

Coming out on Prime Video, Shotgun Wedding is an action rom-com starring Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Coolitz and more and has been directed by Jason Moore. As the titular couple heads out for its destination wedding, their event is already endangered by their two headstrong families and their own final nervous ticks before the wedding. Soon, another unprecedented danger lands at the location in the form of hijackers who take the party under their hostage.

Pamela, a Love Story

In this autobiographical documentary on Netflix, Pamela Anderson recounts her ascent to success, which was accompanied by some bumpy romance tracks and the infamous sex tape scandal that marred everything.
