Selenators, your wish has been granted by the Queen! Apple Tv+ has released Selena Gomez’s much-awaited documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me today. Directed by Alek Keshishian, the 1 hour 35 minutes documentary features Selena Gomez, her best friend Raquell Steven, Selena’s Mother Mandy Teefey and her entire crew. It documents Selena suffering from the aftermath of her battle with Lupus and her Bipolar Disorder.

AppleTV+ describes the series as:

After years in the limelight, Selena Gomez achieves unimaginable stardom. But just as she reaches a new peak, an unexpected turn pulls her into darkness. This uniquely raw and intimate documentary spans her six-year journey into a new light.

The movie starts with the disclaimer that it may be sensitive for some viewers, given Selena’s years of battle with her mental health. The pop star has bared it all by revealing her journal entries and sharing glimpses of her personal life with the world. This was a rather bold decision for Selena, who remained away from the limelight during her trials with Bipolar.

Selena promises her fans to reveal only her darkest secrets in the film. Keep reading if you want to know whether she has fulfilled her promise. But the one thing we know for sure is Justin Bieber filled many pages of Selena’s journal.

The singer-turned-philanthropist has talked about her highly publicised relationship with Justin, her battle with lupus, bipolar disorder and the turmoil she’s had to go through being in the limelight. She has taken her behind the camera with her and given her fans a chance to see things through her lens. Constantly being under the radar and being blasted for enjoying and just living her life, trying to please everyone from her producers and directors to her fans, the singer has shared the struggles of a star.

Selena is raw and unfiltered in the movie. Her first dialogue in the documentary is “I am tired”. Despite having it all since she was just 7 years old, Selena Gomez does not feel enough. She can be seen crying and constantly complaining about her life and about being objectified. It is disheartening to see how the spotlight and the stardom she worked so hard for are now pushing her towards Darkness.

Selena shares her insecurities about her body and her desire to have a booty that she doesn’t have. She even compares her body to that of a 12-year-old boy but then goes on stage and sings Who Says You’re Not Perfect? The Rare Beauty Founder who preaches kindness to people wasn’t kind to herself at all.

It is interesting to see how the pop star seemed to answer her fans through her songs. Through the documentary, Selena made sure to let her fans know that you are being heard and answered. Immediately after being questioned about her alcohol and drug problem, the singer sings, You Don’t Know How to Love Me When You’re Sober. When the paparazzi bombarded her with questions about Justin Bieber, she sings, I’m So Sick of That Same Old Love.

Fans also get a peek into her childhood life and neighbourhood. It is overwhelming to see her kindness when she interacts with kids at her childhood school or when she talks about love for girls in Kenya. Selena has shared with us her positive side throughout the film. The actor’s dedication and will to make a change are loud and vivid.

But since this is a documentary, we also get to see Selena being the diva that she is, throwing tantrums at her best friend, Raquelle Stevens, who makes a constant appearance throughout the documentary. At one point, she also seems to take a dig at her ex, “you Know who”, by mentioning how people do not care if boys wear a beanie and anything beneath it. Selena made particularly harsh comments about an interviewer from London, which, honestly, doesn’t look good when you preach kindness all the time.

Is Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me Worth Watching?

If you want my honest opinion, even if you don’t follow Selena Gomez, you have seen her talking about her struggles. She is an emotional person who breaks down while sharing her feelings and has gone through a lot. I was waiting for some dark revelations, and the only thing new was her new single, My Mind and Me, at the end of the documentary.

Trust me, unless you want to spend 1 hour and 35 minutes of your life watching Selena Gomez cry, I think you can skip the movie. We have seen it all before, Selena. There was no intimacy, and at times the scenes were repetitive. Selena had a very powerful message to deliver through the movie, she has always given voice to lupus and mental health patients, but this documentary just didn’t do it for us.

Keshishian was trying to cover a lot, and in that, he lost the essence of the film. I hope they come up with a sequel which shows her getting her life together because that didn’t seem to happen in this part. And in the end, my two cents, stop convincing us that you’re over Justin Bieber.
