Mismatched Season 2 Review: Cute, Dramatic and a Toxic Endgame

Mismatched is a romantic-drama web series directed by Akarsh Khurana and Nipun Dharmadhikari, written by Gazal Dhaliwal and is based on Sandhya Menon’s When Dimple Met Rishi. The series stars Prajakta Koli, Rohit Saraf, Vihaan Samat, Rannvijay Singha and Vidya Malavade and Mismatched season 2 has 8 episodes, each with a runtime of around 40 minutes.

After a disastrous set-up by their families, two teens strike up a tentative friendship at their summer program — but deeper feelings aren’t far behind.

There’s something just insanely cute about Mismatched that will keep you just a bit desperate for more. Picking up after the rather annoying events of the last season, Mismatched season 2 focuses on the loves and lives of Rishi, Dimple and several of the other colourful characters of a summer course.

The events, although feel like taking place over the course of a few years, apparently take place within the span of a month, which almost feels unbelievable considering the number of things that take place on-screen. I mean, these people have some colourful lives that just keep on giving!

Regardless, Mismatched season 2, unlike its predecessor, doesn’t give you the same irritation that the first season did. In fact, the story helps its characters grow and although most of them are still quite immature and just a bit bratty, their character arcs make (most) of them likeable, thanks to them being redeemed.

Dimple and Rishi, in the newest season, have apparently moved on, as the trailer would make you believe. However, lingering feelings for your ex are as difficult to get rid of as yesterday’s sabzi’s stain on your white shirt. As both of them try to understand where their loyalties lie, there’s also a worse problem for Dimple to solve. Will the kids be able to manoeuvre their lives to find success in their personal and professional lives?

With complicated feelings and issues at the helm, Mismatched season 2 tries to discuss every topic. Although all of them are dissected that well, and some really interesting characters don’t get as much screen space as you’d like, it still tries better than the last to understand the complications of growing up in a fast-paced and always-connected world.

Whether it be Dimple’s desperate need to succeed in her professional life and thus putting a ton of pressure on herself or Anmol working through some very heavy trauma, there’s something in the mix for everyone. Again, the series, in spite of getting a second season, doesn’t really flesh out all of its key characters that well, some even being thrown away in a rather rushed fashion.

But, keeping my feelings for the first season in mind, season 2 is cute and fluffy and is also emotional and impressionable to a good degree. Saraf and Koli, playing the leads, look adorable as a button together, and although I didn’t care much for Rishi’s fling, Harsh is a sight for sore eyes. He’s an extra character in the Rishi-Dimple love story, but he leaves an impact with his rather honest portrayal.

Saraf and Koli are just so cute, and although they are constantly bickering with each other, there’s a chemistry there that you can feel. Their sweeter moments are extremely watchable, and, as I mentioned previously, Harsh’s character has a charm that also goes well with Dimple. They also share some cute chemistry that thankfully cuts through the annoyance of them acting like brats most of the time.

However, I felt like Saraf’s character never really has some good direction. The series feels like Dimple’s story and life, and Rishi is just an added character in her life. He has his own issues, of course, but they are not focused on enough and, unfortunately, we miss out on his life and who he is as a person. It’s never nice to see a key character only existing as an extension of another.

Let’s talk about the other characters – Anmol, Simran, Celina, Namrata, and Krish have their own arcs, which do not really take over the main storyline. Anmol’s will probably make everyone feel a bit emotional, especially since his arc is the steepest, although we don’t see too much of the journey. Celina and Namrata, unfortunately, really needed some more discussion, but well.

Does Mismatch season 2 discuss some of the social issues that it introduces, though? Well, yes and no. The series, like always, introduces several serious plot points that conveniently get solved in a rather rushed fashion. I think the series would’ve benefitted from just a tad more focus on the others rather than on the petty fights between Rishi and Dimple.

Coming to the ending, Mismatched season 2, for some reason, ends on another small cliffhanger which I am so confused about – what’s the need? We know Rishi and Dimple are toxic endgame, regardless of what happens. So why the unnecessary dramatic ending? I guess if the series is anything, it is dramatic, so maybe it works in an odd way!

Summing Up: Mismatched Season 2

Mismatched season 2 is an easy-breezy and dramatic watch that takes itself too seriously. The bratty kids can get on your nerves, but season 2, thankfully, provides some nice cute moments to make us want to keep watching.

Mismatched is streaming on Netflix.
