Halloween 2022: The Lighthouse to Black Swan, Psychological Horror Films That’ll Keep You Guessing

Psychological Horror Films have a cult-like fan following that can have the potential to beat the fans of every other genre out there. The genre of Psychological Horror is so well-loved throughout the world and all through the years in which films have evolved that today we have some world-class films in the last decade or so to look up to. The Lighthouse

Robert Eggers’ Academy-winning 2019 release The Lighthouse is one of the most underrated but, also well-loved movies in the genre of psychological horror which also has elements of thriller, survival and character study in it. Starring the veteran actor Willem Dafoe and the brilliant Robert Pattinson, the film is set by the sea during the nineteenth century where two lighthouse keepers are in turmoil after being stranded at a remote outpost as the raging storm hits the sea. Black Swan

Darren Aronofsky’s name is synonymous with psychological fiction, however, it is definitely his 2010 film Black Swan that brought his genius to light. The stunning cast for the film includes Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey Winona Ryder, and others. The story is set against the backdrop of the production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake by the New York City Ballet company where the dancer committed to play the White Swan gets a newfound rival in a new dancer of the crew, overwhelming her and pushing her off the edge time and again as she tries to be perfect. The film is an Academy award winner and is streaming now on Disney+ Hotstar.

Mother!

Another Aronofsky addition that has to be on the list of psychological horror films is the 2017 underrated gem titled Mother! The cast for the film flaunts Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson and Kristen Wiig. With a variety of themes and layers hidden in the storytelling, the film revolves around the life of a peaceful young woman and her writer husband being disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious couple at their isolated country house. The Killing of a Sacred Deer

A Palme d’Or competitor and from the unique film palette directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a film that might need multiple watching but, is worth every time. With an amazing star cast that includes Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan, Raffey Cassidy, Sunny Suljic, Alicia Silverstone and Bill Camp, the film is inspired by the ancient Greek tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis by Euripides. The film follows the story of a cardiac surgeon secretly befriending a teenage boy who ties him to his past but, when he introduces this boy to his family, everyone mysteriously starts falling sick. Midsommar

Talking about psychological horror geniuses, the list will forever be incomplete if there isn’t an Ari Aster movie in it and what better addition than the 2019 film that has a mix of psychology, slasher and folk combined in one- Midsommar! The film stars the terrific Florence Pugh along with Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Ellora Torchia, Archie Madekwe and Will Poulter. We see a dysfunctional couple trip to Sweden in the film with their group of friends for the secretive cult-like midsummer festival, that pulls them into the sinister practices of Scandinavian paganism. The film is available now on MUBI.
