Halloween 2022: Scream to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 5 Slash Horror Films to Paint Your Nights Bloody Red

Slash Horror Films are the one sub-genre that always comes up on the top when talking about horror films. While supernatural horror majorly dominates the genre, slasher films are the ones that come close to real-life horrors and terrify us to the core. Scream (1996)

Scream follows an offbeat group of friends led by Sidney Prescott who becomes the target of a masked killer. As the body count begins to rise, Sidney and her friends find themselves contemplating the ‘Rules’ of horror films as they find themselves living in a real-life one.

Starring David Arquette, Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Jamie Kennedy, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Liev Schreiber and Skeet Ulrich. The film was considered unique at the time of its release for featuring characters aware of real-world horror films who openly discussed the clichés that the film attempted to subvert.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

It is one of the well-known films in the genre, as its plot follows a group of young adults travelling through rural Texas who encounter Leatherface and his murderous family. It is a remake of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 film of the same name, and the fifth instalment in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

In the summer of 1973, four teenagers – Erin (Jessica Biel), Morgan (Jonathan Tucker), Kemper (Eric Balfour), and Andy (Mike Vogel) are driving through Texas on a road trip when they pick up a hitchhiker, Pepper (Erica Leerhsen), who is on her way to Mexico to score some dope.

But as they’re passing through a small town in Travis County, they see a bloody and distraught girl (Lauren German) wandering by the side of the road, and after stopping to help her, they realize she’s been involved in something horribly traumatic. As the kids try to help the girl piece together the story of what happened, they find themselves drawn into the web of a murderous family of subnormal cannibals.

Wrong Turn (2003)

Directed by Rob Schmidt and written by Alan B. McElroy. The film stars Desmond Harrington, Eliza Dushku, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Jeremy Sisto, Kevin Zegers, and Lindy Booth. In this slash horror film, Six people find themselves trapped in the woods of West Virginia and hunted down by cannibalistic mountain men grossly disfigured through generations of in-breeding.

This film launched a series of straight-to-video sequels. Taking away from this, filmmakers around the world tested the levels of on-screen violence an audience would accept. Watch this film on Amazon Prime Video.

Black Christmas (2006)

Black Christmas is written and directed by Glen Morgan and stars Katie Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Oliver Hudson, Lacey Chabert, Kristen Cloke, and Andrea Martin.

The film takes place several days before Christmas and tells the story of a group of sorority sisters who are stalked and murdered in their house during a winter storm. On Christmas Eve, an escaped maniac returns to his childhood home, which is now a sorority house and begins to murder the sorority sisters one by one. It is a loose remake of the 1974 film of the same name.

Prom Night (2008)

In this film, A high school girl named Donna Keppel is traumatized after witnessing her former teacher, Richard Fenton, brutally murder her entire family after he had become dangerously obsessed with her. Three years later, as Donna gets ready for her senior prom, Fenton escapes from custody, follows her to the hotel hosting the prom, and kills anybody who gets in the way of his reunion with Donna.

Directed by Nelson McCormick, it is a loose remake of the 1980 film of the same title. The film stars an ensemble cast including Brittany Snow, Scott Porter, Jessica Stroup, Dana Davis, Collins Pennie, Kelly Blatz, James Ransone, Brianne Davis, Johnathon Schaech, and Idris Elba. It is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
