Instant Dream Home Review: Complete House Transformation in Less Than a Day

Instant Dream Home is a Lifestyle, home-makeover reality series which is released by Netflix on 10 August 2022. Hosted by Orange is the New Black star Danielle Brooks, who is tagged as a team leader on the show. It is produced by Tom Forman, George Verschoor and directed by Anthony B Sacco.

The other cast members who do all the planning and designing include Adair Curtis, Erik Curtis, Nick Cutsumpas and Paige Mobley. There are 8 episodes in the series with a runtime of about 41-47 minutes. In this home renovation series, deserving families get the surprise of their lives when their dilapidated House is transformed in just a few hours.

Netflix’s synopsis of the series reads:

A team of rapid-fire renovators takes big risks and makes painstaking plans to transform families’ homes from top to bottom in just 12 hours.

The show is said to be part home renovation show and part heist movie! A group of families are in for the surprise of their lives, with their homes about to be totally transformed and radically improved from ho-hum to OMG, in just one day! Well, the description sounds pretty fancy and somewhat it is.

The premise of the show is simple, family or friends nominate someone to the show for a home renovation. Usually, the nominated person is someone who is kind and caring about everyone, and who gives back to society without expecting anything in return. From these entries, the show selects the one who really deserves to get the complete home transformation.

What makes the show interesting is that they only have 12 hours, more or less, to renovate every part of the house. The friend and family take the homeowner away for the day so that the building team can get into the house and change the outlook by the time they return in the evening.

But the work on the house actually starts like 3 months ago, where they design and prepare all the things beforehand so that on the day of action, they just need to get on location and put things in place. They come prepared with a complete kitchen wall or a whole bathroom if needed.

The anxiety and the adrenaline rush to get things done on time is exciting to watch and the big surprise reveal at the end is definitely emotional and feels good to watch. However, I don’t really agree with the choices that the design team made in some houses. Like the one house with blue walls on the outside and a red door, didn’t need to be repainted a darker colour.

They could have simply rearranged the furniture, maybe some changes in the interiors and they would be done. Also, after watching the whole series, it felt like they just want to show off their creativity and how lavish they can make the house by installing endless things, instead of making the existing house better. Or working with things that are already there.

Which makes me question, how durable are these installations even. I mean I have seen house renovations take months to be fully furnished and they are making it happen in a day? Have also heard about the same kind of show, which renovated the homes of some kind souls but later, it turned out that they were poorly built because of the time constraint and things soon began falling apart.

I don’t want to be the person that pinpoints mistakes in everything but I wish these shows also showed some behind scenes and how they make it all happen. Where does the money come from for all this expensive renovation? Imagine the homeowners getting a hefty bill for all the construction after the shoot.

Summing Up: Instant Dream Home

It is needless to say that the show will be certainly popular like many other in the same genre. There’s some charming factor about these shows where we love to see the transformations, whether it be a person or a house. The joy that the people get is heartwarming to watch and makes you believe that goodness is still out there.

Every episode gets into the action, right from the start, without wasting time on long introductions and monologues. However, you will feel anxious whenever the host Danielle is assigned something to do, as it ends up causing more trouble (mostly). The show might give you some ideas for your own house and how to decorate/design it.

Instant Dream Home is now streaming on Netflix.
